Christian Unity has not to do with sayingthere are no differences of beliefs but of learning how to relate to people whoare in Christ yet who differ from us on many points of belief.e) Prayers to the SaintsFor Catholic and Orthodox Christians the intercession of the saints, particularlythat of the Virgin Mary, is important in their religious lives. f) Purgatory‘Purgatory’ is a name given to a time of purifying after death before reachingheaven. The soul envisaged in purgatory is elect, someone who dies ‘in thegrace of Christ’ and is saved by Jesus and on the way to heaven, but who needspurifying; the ultimate destiny of the individual is not the issue.In the Vatican II Document The Credo of the People of God, it is held that somesouls in purgatory who ‘die in the grace of Christ’, still ‘must make expiation inthe fire of purgatory.’ 173 This phrase ‘make expiation’ is worrying to manyChristians, Protestant and Orthodox. It is clearly Roman Catholic teaching thatpurgatory is for Christians who ‘had not made satisfaction with adequatepenance for their sins and omissions.’ 174 Such Christians are ‘cleansed afterdeath with punishments designed to purge away their debt.’ This is clearlyunacceptable to Protestants and to many Orthodox believers as well.Timothy Kallistos, as Timothy Ware, an authority on Eastern Orthodoxy, wroteconcerning Orthodox theologians’ view of purgatory:‘The majority would be inclined to say that the faithful departed do notsuffer at all. Another school holds that perhaps they suffer, but if so, theirsuffering is of purificatory but not an expiatory character; for when a mandies in the grace of God, then God freely forgives him all his sins anddemands no expiatory penalties: Christ, the Lamb of God who takes awaythe sin of the world, is our only atonement and satisfaction.’ 175It must be said also that not all Protestants reject the idea that there is noreckoning with God for the saved person, after death. What does Paul meanwhen he says that Christians who build well for God will receive a reward andthose who do not will suffer loss (1 Corinthians 3.14-15)?
