the fields of healing ministries, agencies for social concern and humanitarianaid to the ‘Third World’.At the same time, schemes for unions and mergers of denominations, havinghad some success in the early part of the century, particularly overseas, seemed to run out of steam by the end of the century. Paradoxically, as far asEvangelical Protestantism is concerned, the late 20 th Century saw also a declinein interest in denominational distinctives: what mattered most were a localchurch’s Evangelical credentials.Roman Catholicism underwent an ‘aggiornamento’ 11 which, in respect to itsrelations with other denominations, meant that after Vatican II the long-heldofficial view that members of other churches could not, ipso facto, beconsidered as fellow Christians came to be regarded as out-dated in the face ofa new spirit of brotherliness which came to regard them as ‘separatedbrethren’.However, in responding to liberal tendencies in Protestantism, particularlyregarding the place of women in the ministry of the Church, the CatholicChurch put itself in a position in which organisational and structural union withother churches now seems less and less likely. But ‘spiritual ecumenism‘ is stillon the agenda. There is now a widespread acknowledgement that ‘Christendom’ is no more, and that all Christian churches are living in a situation in some ways resemblingthe situation faced by the Early Church. Surrounded by a cultureunsympathetic to the world of Christian faith, in reality each denomination is acollection of local churches, ‘ecclesiae’, as in the first days of the Church.Yet, instead of being surrounded, as in the days of the Early Church, by amultitude of pagan religions, temples and religious activities, the Church is nowsurrounded by a secularism and humanism, which is commonly indifferent toit, but now shows some increasingly hostile elements. In addition, immigrationhas brought to Europe, in particular, world religions that challenge theexclusivity of the Christian Gospel.11Aggiornamento, literally ‘bringing up to date’: One of the key words used during theSecond Vatican Council.Page 15
