APPENDIX 1THE NICENO-CONSTANTINOPOLITAN CREEDThis is the text of the Vatican-based interdenominational InternationalConsultation on English Texts (1975).We believe in one God, the Father Almighty,maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternallybegotten of the Father.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten not made, of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made.For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven;by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from (of) the VirginMary and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; heascended into heaven.He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,who proceeds from the Father (and the Son).With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.He has spoken through the Prophets.We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead,and the life of the world to come. Amen.This is not the Nicene Creed which came out of the Council of Nicaea in 325AD, but a development of it, one probably ratified by the Council ofConstantinople in 381 AD and affirmed at Chalcedon in 451 AD.The developed version of this Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed differs in noessential respect from that which came out of Nicaea in 325 AD. The laterCreed is fuller in expressing the Biblical basis of the Christian faith. Forinstance, where Nicaea 325 stated that Jesus ‘suffered and rose again the thirdPage 223
day’, the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed has ‘crucified for us under PontiusPilate, suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third dayaccording to the scriptures’, clearly a more Biblically accurate confession.In both Creeds the eternal deity of Jesus is affirmed. Nicaea 325 has ‘the onlybegotten Son of God who was begotten from the Father before all worlds’; theNiceno-Constantinopolitan Creed has ‘the only Son of God, eternally begottenof the Father, God from God’.In both Creeds, Jesus’ suffering was ‘for our salvation’.Later, the Western Church added the filioque clause in order to state that theHoly Spirit proceeded from the Father ‘and from the Son’ (filioque).Gerald Bray writes:‘The filioque clause was never accepted in the East, and although it didnot provoke the great schism of 1054, it helped to prevent a reunion ofthe Churches in 1274 and again in 1439. Today it is a major differencebetween the Eastern and Western Churches.’ 203At one level, the filioque debate is a matter of semantics, a question of a Greekor Latin word being preferred. The Greek (Eastern) church, in speaking of therelation of the Holy Spirit to the Father, used ‘ekporeuesthai’, to go forth asfrom a source, and the Latin (Western) Church used ‘proceder’, to come from,without involving any idea of origin.The Western Church was keen to emphasize the full Deity of the Son, andfilioque says that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and also from theSon. The Eastern Church, while also holding to the full Deity of Christ, wishedto safeguard the sole origin of the Holy Spirit in the Father, as the source of allthings, and so could not accept the filioque. The debate goes on and there aretheologians on both sides who maintain that theological truth, not justsemantics, is the issue at stake.One way forward that has been suggested is that the Holy Spirit, proceedingfrom the Father, should be seen as coming through the Son.
