inherent in the pohcy o f industrial expansion to which she is committed - Italy’s
exports have risen much more slowly and it seems unlikely that the pace of
expansion in the fifties will be regained. The accompanying tables underline
Italy’s increasing dependence on imports o f raw materials, fuels and foodstuffs.
The inabiUty o f agriculture to satisfy the increasing demand for meat and the
more expensive foodstuffs, which had risen with increasing afifiuence, was a contributory
factor in the 1963 balance o f payments crisis. Tourist receipts (in
recent years equalling about 15% o f those from visible exports^) and emigrant
remittances are important items in the balance o f payments.
^In 1964 Italy earned $826 million more from foreign tourists than her own tourists
spent abroad.
