Otro ejemplo del uso de los ecosistemas
ocurrió en Rajastán (India), que
vivió uno de los episodios de sequía
más graves de su historia en 1986. En los
años que siguieron a esa catástrofe, una ONG
creó, con ayuda de los habitantes, estructuras
para recolectar el agua y regenerar parte
de los suelos y los bosques de la región. Como
resultado, la cobertura forestal aumentó
en más del 30%, el nivel de los manantiales
subterráneos subió varios metros y la productividad
de las tierras cultivables mejoró. Hay
muchos ejemplos más de esta tecnología
verde: Madagascar desarrolló un sistema de
intensificación del arroz y en China se están
creando las primeras “ciudades esponja”, con
el objetivo de reciclar el 70% del agua lluvia
mediante suelos más permeables.
