La casa —esta misma donde ahora descanso,
pero distinta, claro— nos recibía por las
noches y durante los domingos; las horas
restantes se iban en distribuir la mercancía.
Estuve familiarizado con las aguas desde
niño. Por eso mismo supe tempranamente
que la presencia de un remolino tenía significados
diversos y especiales: dirección de
las aguas, poder absorbente, lanzamientos
de la nave en sentido inesperado.
Así, de repente, cuando yo tenía seis años
surgió un mínimo punto, ágil y giratorio,
en medio del río. El vasto líquido parecía
incapaz de frenar allí, pero lo hacía: algo se
alteraba en su fondo y provocaba aquella
delicada ondulación. Estaba asistiendo a su
nacimiento y no lo sabía.
The house —this same one where I now
sit, but different, of course welcomed us
at night and on Sundays; we spent the rest
of the time distributing the merchandise.
I have known these waters since childhood,
which is why I understood from a
young age that a whirlpool indicated many
things the flow of the current, the ower
of suction, a boat flying off in an unepected
direction.
When I was 6, a small, lively spinning locus
suddenly appeared in the middle of the
river. It seemed impossible that the aqueous
expanse would pause there, but it did:
something at the bottom had changed,
causing that subtle rippling. I was present
at its birth and I didn’t know it.
