La visita bien vale la pena para apreciar el
desarrollo de la cartografía en esos años de
conquista y colonización, entender la función
transitista del istmo centroamericano
—visite luego el canal para apreciar in situ la
consecuencia tangible de toda esta historia
cartográfica— y descubrir, por ejemplo, que
Portobelo fue el lugar más “mapeado” de
Panamá hasta la construcción del canal y
que hubo una guerra desatada por la oreja
amputada de un tal Jenkins. En la Librería de
Panamá Viejo está el libro que dio origen a
esta muestra: Los mapas antiguos de Panamá
y Darién (1503-1879), producto de una investigación
de siete meses que Araúz Torres realizó
en la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados
Unidos como becario de la Fundación Kislak.
El Sitio Arqueológico de Panamá Viejo está
al sureste de Ciudad de Panamá, sobre la vía
Cincuentenario. El horario es de martes a
domingo, de 8:30 a.m. a 4:30 p.m., y la tarifa
de entrada es de diez dólares para nacionales,
quince para extranjeros y cinco para estudiantes.
La tarifa incluye la visita al parque arqueológico,
al Museo de la Plaza Mayor y al Mirador
de la Catedral. La entrada a la exhibición de
mapas antiguos cuesta tres dólares.

that inspired this exhibition, Los mapas antiguos de
Panamá y Darién (1503-1879) (he ntiue as
of Panama and Darien), can be found at the Librería
de anam ieo. Its the roduct of a sevenmonth
investigation carried out by ra orres at the
United States Library of Congress while on a fellowship
from the Kislak Foundation.
The Panama Viejo Archaeological Site is located
southeast of Panama City, on the Via Cincuentenario.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, from 8:30 am to
4:30 pm, the entrance fee is ten dollars for Panamanians,
fifteen dollars for international visitors, and
five dollars for students. he fee includes admission
to the archaeological park, the Museum of the Plaza
Mayor, and the Mirador de la Catedral. Admission to
the antiue ma collection costs three dollars.
