Workshop on Management of Medically compromised patients in dentistry and hands on BLS<br />
course<br />

A special interest group was created by JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru, titled<br />
“Management of Medical Problems and Medical Emergencies in Dentistry”. This group consists of likeminded<br />
Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons Dr. Sahith Kumar Shetty (group coordinator), Dr S.Manjula, Dr S.Shyam Sundar,<br />
Dr S. Shivananda, Dr S.N. Chandan, Dr S. Mamatha - Gynecologist, Dr M.Mahesh - Internal Medicine specialist<br />
and Dr Sheela Kumar Gujjari - Periodontist. This group is intended to create a scientific platform as a forum of<br />
discussion amongst various departments of medicine and dentistry regarding comprehensive management of<br />
patients presenting with various medically compromised conditions to develop a scientific and rational algorithm<br />
in management of such patients.<br />
Cardiac arrest is an important cause of death in people among the society, 70% of which occurs in house.<br />
Hence Basic Life Support (BLS) is an important lifesaving skill everybody has to possess which could be of great<br />
use in such situations. This SIG is hence intending to train people in this life saving skill.<br />
The SIG with this theme conducted a two-day workshop for practicing dental surgeons on management of<br />
Medically Compromised Patients in Dentistry and a hands-on course on Basic life support on 7th and 8th<br />
February <strong>2018</strong> at JSS Dental College and Hospital. A total of 65 delegates participated and they were trained in<br />
providing Basic Life Support to cardiac arrest patients.<br />
Master Class- Teachers Training Programme<br />
A two-day National Seminar on “Master Class - Teachers Training Programme” was conducted by Department<br />
of Orthodontics, JSS Dental College& Hospital on 30th& 31st March <strong>2018</strong> in association with Indian Orthodontic<br />
Society. Dr Praveen Kulkarni, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College<br />
spoke on Qualitative research in Dental Education. Dr Animesh Jain, Professor and Head, Dept. of Community<br />
Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore lectured on Changing trends in Assessment.<br />
Dr Vinutha Shanker Professor and Head, Dept of Physiology, Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar, Karnataka<br />
spoke on Reflective learning Practices. A Panel Discussion on Relevance of Competency based Learning<br />
methods in Current scenario was conducted with the panelists being Dr Animesh Jain, Dr Rashmi Jain, Dr<br />
Chandrashekar B R with Dr Praveen Kulkarni being the moderator. Dr Sridevi Padmanabhan, Prof. & HOD,<br />
Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Editor, Journal of the Indian Orthodontic Society lectured on Scientific<br />
Writing & Research. Dr Ciraj Ali Mohammed, Deputy Director of the Manipal Centre for Professional and<br />
Personal Development, Professor of Microbiology at Manipal University extensively lectured on Interactive<br />
teaching methods. Dr.Keluskar K M, Professor, KLE Dental College, Belgaum, Karnataka gave an insight on<br />
OSCE & OSPE in Orthodontics. Dr Jayesh S Rahalkar, Professor and Head, Dept. of Orthodontics, Dr.D.Y.Patil<br />
Dental College and Hospital, Pimpri, Pune lectured on Orthodontic training in the form of group discussion<br />
& case presentation. On the second day the panelists for the panel discussion on Communication Skills were<br />
Dr Prashanth Vishwanath, Dr Pushpalath& Dr Mala Ram Manohar with the moderator being Dr Deepa Bhat.<br />
The programme was attended by more than fifty delegates from across the country. Such Teachers training<br />
programmes are relevant in the current scenario wherein it provides an opportunity for teachers to upgrade<br />
their teaching skill which is of larger interest to students and teaching faculty. Dr Raghunath N, Prof & Head of<br />
Dept of Orthodontics was the Organizing Chairman and Dr Nitin V Muralidhar was the Organizing Secretary for<br />
the programme.<br />
