His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the 23rd Pontiff of Sri Jagadguru<br />
Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math, known as Sri Suttur Math, inherited the legacy of the 10 century old<br />
Srimath at an early age. He was born in 1916 and ascended the Peetha in 1928 when he was hardly twelve. He<br />
shared the responsibilities with his senior, Jagadguru Pattada Shivarathri Mahaswamigalu. Ever since he had<br />
been at the helm of affairs of the Math for more than half a century. Every step he took forward was in search<br />
of new areas of service.<br />
He was a patron of arts and literature and a scholar in Kannada and Sanskrit. He sacrificed his educational<br />
career to provide succour to the helpless poor. The burning desire to assuage the educational needs of hundreds<br />
rural children, he started the first free hostel at Mysore in 1941. Thus began his journey of socio- economic<br />
transformation of the region with the establishment of Schools, Colleges and Sanskrit Patashalas in and around<br />
Mysore . A single minded dedication to a task aimed at the welfare of all alone goaded him to trudge a path<br />
of sacrifice. The incredible divine grace coupled with intense and sustained focus resulted in materialisation<br />
of his great dreams of establishing free schools and hostels, professional colleges, centres of art, music,<br />
and literature etc,. Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamiji had a strong vision of starting educational<br />
institutions in rural areas considering the hardship of students coming to cities seeking education. In order<br />
to make this possible, he started the Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara Mahavidyapeetha in 1954, later it<br />
was registered under the Societies’ Registration Act in 1962. Under the untiring efforts of Dr. Sri Shivarathri<br />
Rajendra Mahaswamiji, the Vidyapeetha has witnessed enormous growth in the field of education. Thousands<br />
of children, men and women found solace under his boundless compassion.<br />
Though the earthly sojourn of His Holiness came to end in 1986, his indomitable spirit lingers through over<br />
350 institutions across the continents. The centenary birth anniversary of Jagadguru Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra<br />
Mahaswamiji was celebrated in 2015 by the devotees all over the world as a token of expressing the respect<br />
and gratitude to the ever-loving spirit of this Noble Saint and by following his principle of `work is worship’.<br />
