School of the Art Institute of Chicago Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects Master of Architecture Master of Architecture with emphasis in Interior Architecture The Executive Director of Development and Public Affairs directs the planning, implementation, and administration of all development, alumni, and public affairs. 11) Associate Dean of Technology The Associate Dean provides comprehensive oversight of integrated technology and its budget for the entire School, including the student laptop program, faculty computing needs, and high-end technical de- mands of specific programs, facilities and classrooms; as well as software licensing agreements, long-range planning, and as a representative in technology conferences and partnerships. 12) Associate Dean of Academic Administration The primary role of the Associate Dean is to oversee the implementation of curriculum and programs including new degree and summer programs, on a semester-by-semester basis working closely with the Deans, Registrar, the Associate Dean of Technology, and Vice President of Instructional Resources and Facilities Management. 13) Divisional Deans In addition to the Dean of Faculty, the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies are tenured full-time faculty with broad responsibilities for the assessment, development, and coordina- tion of graduate curricula, working closely with program and department Chairs, the Faculty Senate’s Curriculum Committee, and the Division Chairs. The Gradate Dean coordinates with faculty who provide administration of the graduate programs, including the MArch program. 14) Division Chairs The primary responsibilities of the two elected division chairs—Chair of the Graduate Division and the Chair of the Undergraduate Division—include contract and tenure review, adjunct promotion, and super- vision of all full-time searches. They serve as omsbudspersons for all faculty in relation to student and faculty concerns and grievances. 15) Department chairs and program directors Most curricular departments or program are headed by a Chair. Chairs are normally nominated by their departmental faculty, and the typical term of office for a Chair is three to five years. Chairs have responsibil- ity for: recommending faculty appointments; developing course schedules; hiring part-time faculty; calling departmental meetings; and, managing the on-going administrative work and staff of the department. Chairs have minimal teaching assignments in exchange for administrative release time. Rather than one departmental chair, AIADO has elected a transitional model of three program directors, including one devoted to graduate programs in architecture and interior architecture studies. 16) Administrative units, directors, and assistants Departments are supported by combined administrative units, sharing staff, office space, and resources. These cooperative, interdepartmental structures are most often based on location and proximity as well as disciplines and the number of support personnel required to maintain facilities, resources, and equip- ment. The MArch program is housed within the department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO). The Department of Historic Preservation (HPRES) is also administrated by the same administrative unit. The administrative staff oversee the daily operations of the department, supervise the administrative and student assistants, and provide organizational, clerical, and curricular support. An Administrative Director heads each unit, and works closely with the chairs and program directors to provide administrative support. The director works with the department and the academic administration to set goals and prioritize workflow, delegating responsibilities to administrative assistants and student workers as appropriate. The unit staff for AIADO/HPRES is lead by a Senior Administrative Director, an Assistant Director, an Ad- ministrative Assistant, and student workers. Staff also serve as the primary liaison between current and prospective students and faculty. Architecture Program Report | 82
I. Institutional Support and Commitment to Continuous Improvement Situated in the AIADO/HPRES Academic Unit, the department offers four graduate degree programs and one undergraduate degree program. In addition to the MArch with its four tracks, AIADO also administrates the MDes/DesOb and the MFA, which has tracks in Interior Architecture, Designed Objects, and Design with Emerging Technologies. Of the 110 current graduate students in AIADO, 93 are in the professional degree programs (MArch and MDes) and 63 students, or approximately 70%, are enrolled in the MArch program. There are 17 additional departmental graduate students: 11 in MFA in Interior Architecture, 2 in MFA in Design for Emerging Technologies, and 4 in MFA in De- signed Objects program. The BIA degree program is AIADO’s undergraduate degree offering, in addition to AIADO’s informal pathways in architecture and designed objects. The Academic Unit also provides administrative support to one additional degree program, the Master of Science in Historic Preservation with up to 32 degree-seeking graduate students. 17) Organizational Charts The chart on the following page describes the administration in the AIADO/HPRES unit.
