3.6. HIGHLIGHT DAYS
HIGHLIGHT DAY
In the Children Club 2x or 3x per week the day has a
theme and is a highlight. Everything this day is related
to a certain theme. The activities have to be age
appropriate.
Preparation
Already think of a course of the event when planning it.
If you carry out this highlight day for the first time have
all materials prepared. Maybe try in advance, if your
ideas will really work. The theme shall be like a red
through the complete day. This means, it is not enough
to only plan the active program accordingly. You also
need to dress up correspondingly, decorate the Mungo
club or the location where your highlight takes place.
Important: be creative!
Completion: (example pirates day)
Question / storytelling and making costumes:
Spin a red thread through your program. First start
talking about pirates. Ask the children what pirates are.
Are they flying in planes, throw a lasso or wear a
knight’s armour or a nice suit? Who knows famous
pirates? What do pirates always carry with them?
Work-shop: Make your own sabres, belts, hats, viewing
glass or parrot from cardboard. Tell the children what is
happening in the afternoon, i.e. treasure hunt.
This increases their anticipation and they will definitely
come back in the afternoon.
Highlight in the afternoon:
Now it is time to look like real pirates! Make-up the
children with a moustache, some scars, big eyebrows,
tattoos with skulls. You cannot put on make-up for all
children at the same time, therefore use this time to
think of a battle cry and some good pirates names. Now
you are real pirates! But where is the treasure? Give the
children the first tip on a treasure map (to be prepared
at the beginning of the season, can be painted on an
old bed linen, try to make it real) and start the treasure
hunt. In order to get from place to place the children
need to solve different riddles and tasks. In the end you
will find the treasure together. The box might be filled
with bracelets. Only hide the pieces of the treasure
map shortly before the program starts, so they cannot
get lost. There are many options for a highlight or
theme day. However it is important that you have an
exact plan before and prepare it well. Furthermore
really the complete day should be under this theme. It
is not enough to wear a black eye patch when announcing
it, tell some stories and go on the treasure hunt.
This day is meant to be a special experience for the
children, so make it one. Often children will tell in their
next holiday about this special day!
