onstrated <strong>the</strong> possibilities <strong>of</strong> use- wear analysis on coral tools. It also provides a<br />

more <strong>in</strong>- depth view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manner <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Amer<strong>in</strong>dians <strong>in</strong>teracted with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong> resource exploitation. Last, <strong>the</strong> use- wear study gave<br />

coral a place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> technological system <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> native peoples <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

It turns out that <strong>the</strong>y used coral tools for various activities. They carefully<br />

selected <strong>the</strong>ir tools for specific purposes <strong>and</strong> obviously had a thorough knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> physical properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> various raw materials <strong>from</strong> which <strong>the</strong>ir tools were<br />

made. Coral tools <strong>the</strong>refore played a vital role <strong>in</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g out various activities <strong>and</strong><br />

formed an <strong>in</strong>tegral part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> technological system. Their rough surfaces, ideal<br />

for rasp<strong>in</strong>g, scrap<strong>in</strong>g, or polish<strong>in</strong>g, make <strong>the</strong>m very suitable for such tasks as <strong>the</strong><br />

gr<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g or sharpen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> shell tools or objects <strong>of</strong> very hard wood types. It makes<br />

clear that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> Anse à la Gourde had a flexible technological system<br />

<strong>in</strong> which tools made <strong>of</strong> different materials were to some extent <strong>in</strong>terchangeable.<br />
