Figure 15.4. Sr isotopic ratios for human enamel <strong>and</strong> rice rat enamel samples. Samples are<br />

sorted <strong>in</strong> order <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g 87 Sr/ 86 Sr with<strong>in</strong> each group. The horizontal bar represents <strong>the</strong><br />

mean strontium ratio found for <strong>the</strong> local soil.<br />

Provenance <strong>of</strong> Nonlocals?<br />

Nonlocal <strong>in</strong>dividuals were raised <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r geochemical environment. Where exactly<br />

<strong>the</strong>y came <strong>from</strong> cannot be determ<strong>in</strong>ed at present s<strong>in</strong>ce sufficient geochemical<br />

<strong>and</strong> bioarchaeological data <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> region are miss<strong>in</strong>g. The majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

with a nonlocal strontium isotope signature have lower values. Because <strong>the</strong><br />

local rock values for <strong>the</strong> volcanic isl<strong>and</strong>s are known to be significantly lower (Mac-<br />

Donald et al. 2000) it seems plausible that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>dividuals had spent <strong>the</strong>ir childhood<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> volcanic part <strong>of</strong> Guadeloupe ( Basse- Terre) or o<strong>the</strong>r volcanic isl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

Individuals grow<strong>in</strong>g up on <strong>the</strong>se isl<strong>and</strong>s are expected to have 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values between<br />

<strong>the</strong> local rock value <strong>and</strong> seawater values.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Study</strong><br />

The strontium isotope values <strong>from</strong> Anse à la Gourde <strong>in</strong>dicate that it is possible<br />

to acquire <strong>in</strong>formation on residential mobility <strong>in</strong> a population <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Late Ceramic<br />

period. However, more data are needed concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> diet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> population<br />

to assess <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> various sources <strong>of</strong> strontium to <strong>the</strong> biogenic<br />

strontium ratio <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enamel. In order to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> provenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nonlocal<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals, three approaches are necessary. More strontium isotope data <strong>of</strong><br />
