as <strong>in</strong> excavations <strong>in</strong> Mart<strong>in</strong>ique, Puerto Rico, <strong>and</strong> Bolivia. He has been <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

expert <strong>of</strong> paleopathology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Taíno populations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic<br />

<strong>and</strong> has been codirector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> excavation <strong>of</strong> Loma C<strong>and</strong>elon <strong>in</strong> collaboration with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Italian archaeo- anthropological mission <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic.<br />

Marcos Mart<strong>in</strong>ón- Torres is lecturer <strong>in</strong> archaeological science <strong>and</strong> material culture<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Archaeology, University College London. He has a special<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> scientific, archaeological, <strong>and</strong> textual approaches to<br />

materials <strong>and</strong> technologies, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>form about past <strong>the</strong>ories<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices. He has worked primarily on medieval <strong>and</strong> later metallurgy <strong>and</strong> alchemy<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Old <strong>and</strong> <strong>New</strong> Worlds.<br />

Lee A. <strong>New</strong>som is associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> archaeological anthropology at <strong>the</strong><br />

Pennsylvania State University. Her research is focused <strong>in</strong> paleoethnobotany with<br />

emphasis on human- l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability <strong>of</strong> biological<br />

resources. She has analyzed archaeobotanical assemblages <strong>from</strong> throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Caribbean</strong> <strong>in</strong> collaboration with researchers <strong>from</strong> several <strong>in</strong>stitutions, <strong>and</strong> is currently<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> projects <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lesser Antilles isl<strong>and</strong>s, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Florida.<br />

Channah Nieuwenhuis is a wear trace <strong>and</strong> residue specialist work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

Laboratory for Artifact Studies at <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Archaeology <strong>of</strong> Leiden University<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s. She conducted Ph.D. research on chert artifacts <strong>from</strong> preceramic<br />

sites <strong>in</strong> Colombia. For <strong>the</strong> past two years she has studied wear traces on<br />

artifacts <strong>from</strong> various sites <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> South America <strong>and</strong> has been<br />

engaged <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g a reference collection for residue analysis like phytoliths <strong>and</strong><br />

starch.<br />

José R. Oliver is a lecturer <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> American archaeology at <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Archaeology, University College London. He has conducted research <strong>in</strong> Venezuela<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong>, particularly <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico, for which he has received<br />

grants <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> British Academy, <strong>the</strong> Consejo Para la Protecciòn del Patrimonio<br />

Arqueo lògico de Puerto Rico, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Puerto Rico State Preservation Historical<br />

Office. Research is currently focused on <strong>the</strong> civic- ceremonial centers (bateyes) <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Caguana- Utuado region <strong>and</strong> on village lifeways <strong>and</strong> agrarian economies <strong>of</strong> late<br />

(Taíno) societies <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico <strong>and</strong> Dom<strong>in</strong>ican Republic.<br />

Jaime R. Pagán Jiménez is a Puerto Rican archaeo- ethnobotanist <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

researcher/ consultant <strong>in</strong> cultural resources management. His ma<strong>in</strong> works deal<br />

with <strong>the</strong> early <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> useful plants <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Caribbean</strong> isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> with<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terregional dynamics developed around <strong>the</strong> spread <strong>of</strong> plants <strong>and</strong> cul<strong>in</strong>arycultural<br />

traditions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> circum- <strong>Caribbean</strong>. O<strong>the</strong>r l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest are <strong>the</strong> sociopolitical<br />

dimensions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> archaeological practices with<strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> America <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Caribbean</strong>.<br />
