through social <strong>in</strong>teractions to which <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>in</strong>tegrated (Gosden <strong>and</strong> Marshall<br />

1999), it is viable to th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong> identified plants, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g end products,<br />

would have different mean<strong>in</strong>gs as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vary<strong>in</strong>g social environments<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were utilized, as would appear to be <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two sites here<br />

considered. The lithic implements do not present use histories that would <strong>in</strong>dicate<br />

a particular, specialized plant- specific process<strong>in</strong>g function. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> artifacts’<br />

wear patterns <strong>and</strong> starch residues displayed multiple functions: <strong>the</strong>y were used to<br />

macerate tubers, roots, corns, <strong>and</strong> tuberous trunks <strong>and</strong>, as well, used to gr<strong>in</strong>d mature<br />

green seeds. The identified plants can provide opportunities to discuss <strong>the</strong><br />

production processes <strong>the</strong>y represent, to <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>in</strong>sights about <strong>the</strong> subsistence system<br />

that furnished <strong>the</strong> raw plant products at each site, <strong>and</strong> to <strong>in</strong>form about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tra<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terregional <strong>and</strong> diachronic plant- human <strong>in</strong>teractions.<br />

Discussion<br />

For reasons <strong>of</strong> space we will concentrate <strong>the</strong> discussion on <strong>the</strong> relative importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> identified plants, which contrast with <strong>the</strong> accepted general perception<br />

that dom<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>the</strong> current underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> subsistence strategies deployed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> natives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greater Antilles.<br />

Even though several early Spanish chroniclers (e.g., Las Casas 1909) commented<br />

on <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> several dist<strong>in</strong>ct agricultural systems, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir floral<br />

components, <strong>the</strong>re is no certa<strong>in</strong>ty about how <strong>the</strong>se systems operated <strong>in</strong> different<br />

areas, much less <strong>in</strong> prehispanic time periods. Despite its limitations, this study<br />

suggests a tantaliz<strong>in</strong>gly different scenario than that contemplated by many <strong>Caribbean</strong><br />

scholars. For example, <strong>the</strong> high ubiquity <strong>of</strong> Zamia starch <strong>in</strong> both sites alludes<br />

to a much more prom<strong>in</strong>ent economic role for this plant <strong>in</strong> nurtur<strong>in</strong>g societies,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those with more complex forms <strong>of</strong> sociopolitical organization (i.e.,<br />

cacicazgos; Curet 2003).<br />

The range <strong>of</strong> tuberous <strong>and</strong> seed plants obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> tools analyzed here<br />

are <strong>in</strong>dicative <strong>of</strong> a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> potentially high- yield food plants, counter<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Spanish colonial <strong>in</strong>sistence that <strong>the</strong> Taíno staples were manioc <strong>and</strong> ajes (varieties<br />

<strong>of</strong> sweet potato). The varied floral assemblage deduced <strong>from</strong> lithic implements<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts to <strong>the</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g complexity <strong>of</strong> both <strong>the</strong> productive <strong>and</strong> nutritional<br />

systems <strong>in</strong> operation <strong>in</strong> Puerto Rico.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> identified plants, we suggest a cont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>in</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cul<strong>in</strong>ary practices that extends <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Archaic period until <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifteenth<br />

century (<strong>New</strong>som <strong>and</strong> W<strong>in</strong>g 2004; Pagán Jiménez et al. 2005). The presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> starch gra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> zamia, maize, beans, sweet potato, yam, gruya (achira), yautía,<br />

manioc, <strong>and</strong> corozo (a palm seed) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ostiones <strong>and</strong> Capá (a.d. 700–1450) contexts<br />

are most reveal<strong>in</strong>g. O<strong>the</strong>r plants, like arrowroot <strong>and</strong> lerén (a root crop), have<br />

been identified by Pagán Jiménez (2005b) for <strong>the</strong> Huecoid tradition (ca. 200 b.c.<br />
