fir<strong>in</strong>g behaviors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clays. Experiments <strong>and</strong> ethnoarchaeological observations<br />

evidenced that traditional potters on <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> used similar techniques (Du<strong>in</strong><br />

2000/2001; H<strong>of</strong>man <strong>and</strong> Jacobs 2000/2001; H<strong>of</strong>man et al. 1993; Van den Bel 1995;<br />

Vredenbregt 2004).<br />

After knead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pound<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> clay, attempts were made to coil <strong>the</strong> clay <strong>and</strong><br />

build up small pots (Figure 2.1). The specimens that survived <strong>the</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g test successfully<br />

(without cracks) were fur<strong>the</strong>r tested for smoo<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> dry<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This was done with shell <strong>and</strong> calabash tools as similar materials were found to<br />

have been employed by <strong>the</strong> precolonial potters to f<strong>in</strong>ish <strong>the</strong>ir wares (Van Gijn <strong>and</strong><br />
