erence plaques (Scott and Turner 1997; Turner et al. 1991). They have been chosen
among those present in all the samples at the same times with a number of observations
not inferior to at least ten. Each trait was elaborated by considering only
the tooth (left or right) in which its expression was higher. This procedure presumes
that the greater value represents its highest genotypic expression (Turner
et al. 1991; Scott and Turner 1997). Individual traits scored along the rank- scales of
expression were then dichotomized into presence/ absence. The frequency of traits,
number of observations and the dichotomic breaking points, recorded according
to Turner and colleagues (1991), are listed in Tables 14.2a (maxilla) and 14.2b
(mandible). Previous studies indicate that very few significant differences occur
between sexes (Coppa et al. 1998; Hanihara 1992; G. Scott 1973; Turner et al. 1991).
However, many workers have found differences in the expression of Carabelli’s
trait (Scott et al. 1983; Townsend and Brown 1981), and in the distal accessory ridge
of the upper and lower canine (G. Scott 1977; Scott et al. 1983). The absence of
sexual dimorphism in dental morphology is supported by this study. Fisher’s Exact
