Crossing the Borders: New Methods and Techniques in the Study of Archaeological Materials from the Caribbean

Benoît Bérard is Maître de Conférences (associate professor) of Caribbean archaeology
at the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane. He has been conducting
archaeological research in Martinique and Dominica. He is currently the director
of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs archaeological mission in Dominica.
His research themes center on lithic technology and the first migrations of agroceramist
into the Antilles.
Mathijs Booden is pursuing a Ph.D. in geology at the University of Auckland,
New Zealand. His current research is on the alteration of volcanic rock by upwelling
hydrothermal fluids. He explores the relation between different types of alteration
and the formation of precious metal ore deposits.
Iris Briels studied Caribbean archaeology at Leiden University. She graduated
in 2004, specializing in use- wear analysis of flint tools. Her research concentrated
on the flint assemblage of the Archaic Age Plum Piece site on Saba (Dutch Antilles).
She has participated in fieldwork on several islands of the Lesser Antilles
and is currently working for RAAP, a Dutch archaeological consulting firm.
Jago Cooper is a Ph.D. student and codirector of the Forum for Island Research
and Experience at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. His
main research interests are focused on the changing patterns of cultural interaction
in the Caribbean, and he is currently involved with a number of collaborative
archaeological projects in Cuba.
Alfredo Coppa is full professor of physical anthropology at the University of
Rome “La Sapienza” in Italy. He has conducted studies of human population paleobiology
in the Caribbean and circum- Caribbean areas researching in different islands
of both the Greater and the Lesser Antilles (Dominican Republic, Cuba,
Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad, and Cura-
