<strong>Archaeological</strong> <strong>Methods</strong>, Archaeometric <strong>Techniques</strong> / 33<br />

Clay ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> Wayana is comb<strong>in</strong>ed with a hunt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g trip <strong>of</strong><br />

several days with <strong>the</strong> whole family (Du<strong>in</strong> 2000/2001:46).<br />

Conclud<strong>in</strong>g Remarks<br />

It is suggested here that <strong>the</strong> best way to determ<strong>in</strong>e provenance areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lesser<br />

Antillean archipelago is to determ<strong>in</strong>e local sherd compositions for settlements<br />

<strong>from</strong> multiple isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> use <strong>the</strong>se as a basis for comparison <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

with clay compositions that def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> total chemical variability <strong>in</strong> locally available<br />

sources. The outcome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se analyses <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with ethnoarchaeological<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation makes one aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sociocultural parameters <strong>and</strong> choices<br />

that may have been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> modes <strong>of</strong> procurement <strong>and</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

clays <strong>and</strong> temper materials by <strong>the</strong> precolonial potters. As such, on Saba, while most<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pottery has been manufactured <strong>of</strong> local clays, <strong>the</strong>re is also evidence that ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

distances have been traveled to purchase <strong>the</strong> raw materials, <strong>and</strong>/ or that <strong>the</strong> exchange<br />

<strong>of</strong> raw materials was <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong> a network <strong>in</strong> which also o<strong>the</strong>r materials,<br />

ideas, <strong>and</strong> people circulated (H<strong>of</strong>man et al. 2007; Hoogl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> H<strong>of</strong>man <strong>in</strong><br />

press).<br />

In <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g years <strong>the</strong> ref<strong>in</strong>ement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se methods <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensive collection<br />

<strong>of</strong> clays <strong>and</strong> pottery <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r isl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> archipelago should broaden<br />

our scope tremendously on <strong>the</strong> provenance, procurement strategies, <strong>and</strong> exchange<br />

networks <strong>of</strong> materials <strong>and</strong> goods among precolonial isl<strong>and</strong> communities.<br />
