that the metals held in the Taíno society that acquired them. The arrival of European
brass and its occurrence at El Chorro de Maíta provides an insight into the
early interactions between Europeans and indigenous peoples, highlighting the
distinctly different value systems of the two cultures.
Further research is currently focused on providing a better chronological framework
for the cemetery, contextualizing the site of El Chorro de Maíta in its wider
archaeological setting, and making comparative archaeometallurgical studies with
metal collections from other sites in Cuba and the wider region of the Caribbean.
