Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser! | Dear Readers!<br />
Mit dem Tod von Königin Elisabeth II., der Königin<br />
des Vereinigten Königreichs von Großbritannien<br />
und Nordirland, am 8. September 2<strong>02</strong>2<br />
ging eine 70 Jahre währende Ära zu Ende. Nach der Krönung<br />
am 6. Mai 2<strong>02</strong>3 regieren nun König Charles III. und<br />
Königin Camilla. Aus diesem Grund widmen wir die Titelgeschichte<br />
dieser Ausgabe dem Vereinigten Königreich<br />
und Nordirland (Seite 22). Diese Sommerausgabe unseres<br />
Magazins ist voll von fesselnden Inhalten. Wir bringen Ihnen<br />
exklusive Interviews mit Ministerin Susanne Raab<br />
(Seite 58) und Christoph Pinter, dem Leiter des Österreich-<br />
Büros des UNHCR, dem Flüchtlingshilfswerk der Vereinten<br />
Nationen (Seite 46). Außerdem finden Sie Kommentare<br />
von Stephanie Liechtenstein über die medizinischen<br />
Anwendungen der Kernenergie (Seite 44) und Walter<br />
Feichtinger über Verteidigungsausgaben als geopolitisches<br />
Barometer (Seite 52).<br />
Im Jahr 2<strong>02</strong>3 feiert Wiener Wasser das 150-jährige<br />
Bestehen der I. Hochquellenleitung (Seite 92) und damit<br />
den Beginn der modernen Wiener Wasserversorgung.<br />
Die feierliche Eröffnung fand am 24. Oktober 1873 mit<br />
der Inbetriebnahme des Hochstrahlbrunnens am<br />
Schwarzenbergplatz statt. „Wasser ist keine übliche Handelsware,<br />
sondern ein ererbtes Gut, das geschützt und<br />
entsprechend behandelt werden muss. In vollem Bewusstsein<br />
über diese verantwortungsvolle Aufgabe kümmern<br />
wir uns in der Stadt Wien darum, die ständige Verfügbarkeit<br />
dieser lebensnotwendigen Ressource zu<br />
sichern“, betonte Bürgermeister Michael Ludwig kürzlich.<br />
Der Tourismus in Wien erlebt wieder einen kräftigen<br />
Aufschwung: Denn Kongresse und Firmenevents in<br />
Wien haben 2<strong>02</strong>2 das Niveau des Vor-Coronajahres 2019<br />
zu rund 80 Prozent erreicht. Zurückgekehrt sind vor allem<br />
wichtige Großveranstaltungen wie internationale<br />
Kongresse. Der Luxus boomt zudem und damit auch die<br />
Fünfstern-Hotels. Mit den bereits eröffneten Häusern<br />
Rosewood Hotel, The Amauris und Almanac Palais Vienna<br />
(Seite 116), werden 2<strong>02</strong>4 auch das Thompson Vienna<br />
2<strong>02</strong>4 sowie das Mandarin Oriental 2<strong>02</strong>5 eröffnen. Unsere<br />

With the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the<br />
Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain<br />
and Northern Ireland, on 8 September<br />
2<strong>02</strong>2, an era spanning 70 years came to a close. Now, following<br />
the coronation on 6 May 2<strong>02</strong>3, King Charles III<br />
and Queen Camilla reign, which is why we dedicate this<br />
<strong>issue</strong>’s cover story to the United Kingdom and Northern<br />
Ireland (page 22). This summer edition of our magazine<br />
is filled with captivating content. We bring you exclusive<br />
interviews with Minister Susanne Raab (page 58) and<br />
Christoph Pinter, Head of the Austria Office of UNHCR,<br />
the United Nations refugee agency (page 46). Additionally,<br />
you’ll find commentaries by Stephanie Liechtenstein<br />
on the medical applications of nuclear energy (page<br />
44) and Walter Feichtinger on defence spending as a geopolitical<br />
barometer (page 52).<br />
In 2<strong>02</strong>3, Vienna Water proudly celebrates the 150th anniversary<br />
of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline<br />
(page 92), marking the inception of modern water supply<br />
in Vienna. The grand opening took place on 24 October<br />
1873 with the inauguration of the Hochstrahlbrunnen<br />
fountain at Schwarzenbergplatz. Mayor Michael Ludwig<br />
emphasised the profound significance of water, stating,<br />
“Water is not a mere commodity, but an inherited asset that<br />
must be protected and treated accordingly. With full awareness<br />
of this responsible task, we, in the city of Vienna, strive<br />
to ensure the constant availability of this vital resource.”<br />
Vienna’s tourism industry is experiencing a robust resurgence,<br />
with conferences and corporate events reaching<br />
nearly 80% of the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Major international<br />
conferences have made a comeback, fuelling<br />
the luxury sector and the rise of five-star hotels. With the<br />
recent openings of the Rosewood Hotel, the Amauris, and<br />
the Almanac Palais Vienna (page 116), Vienna is set to<br />
welcome the Thompson Vienna in 2<strong>02</strong>4 and the Mandarin<br />
Oriental in 2<strong>02</strong>5. Our hotel partners and various restaurants<br />
also offer private dining options, providing a stylish<br />
and discreet setting with exceptional<br />
culinary experiences for intimate gatherings<br />
(page 70). As for travel destinations, we highly<br />
recommend exploring Graz, the capital of<br />
