AGREEMENT
Protection of the high sea
The high sea has been a lawless zone until now. Now there is finally an
agreement to protect it, although the concrete rules still need to be
worked out. Nevertheless, the treaty means hope for sharks, whales,
overfished populations and the seabed threatened by deep-sea mining. For
the second time, the global community has agreed on a historic treaty to
protect nature. In December 2022, UN member states adopted the 30x30
target: 30 per cent of the earth‘s ocean and land area should be under
protection by 2030. un.org
BOOK TIP
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to
Diplomacy
What makes a diplomat? Can the lessons of a
diplomatic career be applied to life? Is
diplomacy glamorous and dramatic? With
typical British humour, former ambassador
Leigh Turner welcomes us to the real world of
diplomacy with his book. As Queen Elizabeth
II‘s diplomatic representative, H.E. Leigh
Turner was posted in Vienna, Moscow, Berlin,
Kiev and Istanbul. With wit, bite and insight,
he tells of the disintegration of the Soviet
Union to the Russian war of aggression on
Ukraine, of espionage and its use in diplomacy, of diplomatic
immunity and of the great political events of the 20th and 21st
centuries – and how they can guide decisions in our lives.
