In the UK, the coronation<br />
was the most-watched<br />
programme of the year,<br />
attracting over 20 million<br />
viewers. Those who chose<br />
to forego the spectacle<br />
had miscalculated:<br />

Above all, the event<br />
served as a strong<br />
reminder that London<br />
remains a magnet for<br />
tourists from around the<br />
world. It is estimated that<br />
62 million pints were<br />
consumed during the<br />
coronation weekend,<br />
though the exact figure<br />
may never be known.<br />

One of the results is that established bonds are being<br />
questioned at all levels.<br />
In the midst of it all, leading the way, is the United<br />
Kingdom. Brexit initially revealed and possibly exacerbated<br />
many fractures. While seeking new partners<br />
on the political and economic world stage, the<br />
United Kingdom was particularly hard-hit by the<br />
pandemic, including economically. The country has<br />
still not fully recovered from the 9.2% decline in economic<br />
output in 2<strong>02</strong>0. Symbolically fitting into this<br />
picture, in 2<strong>02</strong>2, the former British colony India surpassed<br />
the UK to become the world’s fifth-largest<br />
economy.<br />
One of the best-known Austrian business personalities<br />
in England, Hermann Hauser, co-founder of the<br />
technology giant ARM and originally from Tyrol, spoke<br />
in early May on the BBC about the “Brexit idiocy”.<br />
The investor, with extensive activities in and around<br />
Cambridge, was referring to the consequences of the<br />
EU exit on financial markets. Internally, it has also<br />
been proven that being pro-Brexit does not guarantee<br />
political success: The multiple changes in government<br />
leadership in 2<strong>02</strong>2 led to uncertainty in the financial<br />
markets and among partners. At the same time, old,<br />
historical networks have weakened: There is unrest in<br />
many Commonwealth countries, the 56-nation association<br />
of the former empire. Following Barbados in<br />
2<strong>02</strong>1, other members also wish to bid farewell to the<br />
British monarch as head of state. Even the new government<br />
of Australia since 2<strong>02</strong>2 is now seriously considering<br />
the path to becoming a republic.<br />
That is one side of the coin. On the other hand, in<br />
these turbulent years, it has become clearer than ever<br />
