There are so many things that a roof can be. The next time
we start designing a building, perhaps we can also start
with the roof—just like what Junichiro Tanizaki wrote that
we first spread a parasol, and under the parasol's shadow,
we built a house.

Roof played a part in our history. So what can the
future be?
What if roof itself could move? In 2019, Diller Scofidio
+ Renfro and Rockwell Group completed a
18,500-square metre cultural centre in New York
City called the Shed. The gigantic roof clad in
translucent ETFE covers part of the building. But
it can slide out to cover an outdoor plaza. And by
doing so, converting the outdoor plaza into an
extra space for performance and other imaginable
forms of art.
Or what if a roof, big or small, can contribute some
green area to our city? Hayhurst and Co introduces
a new type of green roof to a two-storey house in
London. The pitched roof features stainless-steel
tiers which act as planters for over 800 plants. The
studio called this a ‘hanging-basket roof’. For a city
with limited gardening space like London, it gives the
owners some extra space to garden and presents
an exciting new roofscape to the residential part of
the city.
In the Netherlands, NL Architects designs a housing
block for 10 units with a wavy rooftop. The unit
arrangement is interesting as none of the units is
identical. They vary in floor area and the number of
storeys. However, all units get the same volume of
space and access to the green roof. This building
is giving some green back to the neighbourhood
and getting its residents as close to the greenery
as possible.
