5 Measurement of Branching Fractions for � ¦ � Ã � ¦ decays This chapter analyzes the two modes containing a Ã Ë combined with a charged pion or kaon. Table 5-1 shows the latest results from CLEO using an integrated luminosity of �� fb [58]. Table 5-1. In addition, a control sample of � ¦ � Ã Ë � ¦ decays is used to determine the efficiency of the Ã Ë mass cut. Candidate � mesons are selected corresponding to this specific modes Ã Ë � . The kinematic variables used are the already described energy-substituted mass, Ñ�Ë and energy difference ¡��, where the notation with the subscript � indicates that the candidate energy is calculated assuming the pion mass hypothesis for the charged track. We select candidates in the region �� Î� �Ñ�Ë � �� Î� and � � ��Î � ¡� � � �� Î: this 2-dimensional area is called the grand side-band. In order to define the ¡� side-bands together with the signal box, conservative values for ¡� shift and resolution have to be considered. The shift has to be taken into account since, in the case � ¦ � Ã Ë Ã ¦ , ¡� is calculated using the � mass and thus the mean value of the ¡� distribution of those events is shifted of about �� Å�Î. If one considers a conservative value of �� Å�Î for the ¡� resolution (see the complete discussion in Sec. 5.4.1), the ¡� signal box can be defined by: and thus ¡�Ñ�Ü � ¢ �� Å�Î ¡�Ñ�Ò � ¢ �� Å�Î Æ� � ¡�Ñ�Ü ¡�Ñ�Ò � � Å�Î .
