นอกจากให้ความสะดวกสบายแก่เราแล้ว หลังคายังสามารถ<br />
เป็นองค์ประกอบที่ช่วยทำาให้พื้นที่ละแวกใกล้เคียงมีชีวิตชีวา<br />
ได้อีกด้วย โดยการสร้างความประทับใจแรกและเป็นหนึ่งใน<br />
สิ่งที่ต้อนรับและเชื้อเชิญให้เราก้าวเข้าไปด้านใน<br />
เมื่อปี 1997 ได้มีการประกวดแบบเพื่อฟื้นฟูตลาดเก่า Santa<br />
Caterina ในย่านเมืองเก่าของบาร์เซโลนา แบบโครงการ<br />
ที่ประกวดชนะเป็นของสถาปนิกชาวสเปน Enric Miralles<br />
และ Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT) ซึ่งเสนอหลังคาของ<br />
ตลาด Santa Caterina ที่มีรูปทรงโดดเด่น แตกต่างกับ<br />

Between inside and outside<br />
More than giving us comfort, roof can be the<br />
element that uplifts the neighbourhood—the first<br />
impression and the one that welcomes and invites<br />
us to step inside.<br />
A competition was held in 1997 to restore the<br />
old Santa Caterina market in the old quarter of<br />
Barcelona. The winning proposal went to Spanish<br />
architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue<br />
(EMBT). Contrasting to the modest roof of Naoshima<br />
Hall, Santa Caterina Market is bold. The<br />
proposal retains the old neoclassical façade and<br />
introduces a new roof hovering above. Supported<br />
by a composite structure of steel and wood and<br />
clad in 325,000 pieces and 67 colours of ceramic<br />
tiles, the roof covers a large area of 5,500 square<br />
metres. From the outside, the new roof projects<br />
beyond the façade extending the shaded public<br />
space for people to gather and utilize. From buildings<br />
surrounding the market, the roof appears like<br />
a colourful canvas. And from the inside, shoppers<br />
enjoy a pleasant shopping experience, airy and<br />
protected under the high roof.<br />
But apart from being large and overarching, roof<br />
of a building may consist of many smaller parts.<br />
The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, another<br />
legendary project by EMBT, is composed of many<br />
complex forms. Its roofs come in various types: flat<br />
roofs, a gently-inclined glazed roof, green roofs,<br />
arched and sloping steel roofs that intersect one<br />
another and so on. The most striking roof is perhaps<br />
one over the Garden Lobby. The lobby is topped<br />
with several roofs in a jagged manner. Each roof is<br />
shaped like a boat. Brightly lit, the interior space is<br />
a complex and exciting sight as structure extend at<br />
varying length from the roof above.<br />
