Medical Interpreting Certi�cate Program<br />
This program is offered at the Chelsea campus as a part-time evening program.<br />
Students will be assessed in both English as well as their primary language. English will be assessed<br />
with either the Accuplacer Computerized Placement Test (CPT) or the Accuplacer ESL Level of English<br />
Pro�ciency Test (LOEP). The student’s primary language will be assessed by an examination administered<br />
by the program. This exam requires the student to write and speak in both English and their primary<br />
language. Sections include demographic <strong>info</strong>rmation, vocabulary, interpretation, and written paragraphs<br />
in each language regarding medical interpreting. Applicants to this program are required to undergo<br />
a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI)<br />
check. The outcome of the CORI/SORI check may impact the student’s ability to participate in the clinical<br />
experience. Students must maintain a grade of B- or better in all required courses.<br />

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<br />
Students must apply to the program through the Admissions and Registration Of�ce and:<br />
1. Possess a High School Diploma or GED Certi�cation.<br />
2. Complete college placement tests in English and reading.<br />
3. Place out of, or complete ESL level 3 courses with grades of B or better.<br />
4. Place out of, or complete, ENG 095 and RDG 095.<br />
5. Be literate in their native language.<br />

7. Provide evidence of health insurance and complete a health form.<br />
When they have completed the admission requirements, quali�ed applicants will be invited<br />
for an interview.<br />

PROGRAM OVERVIEW<br />
This program prepares students, through lectures and hospitalbased<br />
clinical experience, to be medical interpreters in a variety<br />
of health care settings.<br />
CRIMINAL OFFENDER RECORD INFORMATION AND<br />
SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY INFORMATION CHECKS<br />
As a prerequisite for a clinical placement in the Medical<br />
Interpreting Certi�cate Program, all students must undergo a<br />
Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check and a Sex<br />
Offender Registry Information (SORI) check. These checks are<br />
required due to potential unsupervised contact with children,<br />
the disabled, or the elderly during a clinical experience. Students<br />
found to have certain criminal convictions or pending criminal<br />
actions will be presumed ineligible for clinical placement. The<br />
<strong>College</strong> is authorized by the Commonwealth’s Department of<br />
Criminal Justice Information Services, pursuant to Massachusetts<br />
General Laws, Chapter 6, Sections 167-178 B, to access CORI<br />
records. Sex Offender checks shall be performed pursuant to<br />
Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 6, Sections 178C-178P.<br />

CAREER OUTLOOK<br />
Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals,<br />
clinics, chronic care facilities, and health maintenance<br />
organizations as medical interpreters.<br />
