AHE-095 Topics in Health Care 3 Credits<br />

This course increases understanding across a broad spectrum of health care topics using<br />

readings and writings as related to the core curriculum.<br />

AHE-101 Medical Interpreting I 3 Credits<br />

This course is designed for bilingual students interested in becoming integral members of the<br />

health care team in bridging the language and cultural gap between patients and providers.<br />

Students will examine issues related to interpreter ethics and the role of the interpreter<br />

in a variety of clinical settings. Topics include anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology,<br />

diagnoses, and medical treatments. Activities are designed to develop listening, memory,<br />

language-switching skills, and decision-making. This course will familiarize students with<br />

the cultural dimensions of health and illness in preparation for their being assigned to an<br />

internship where they perform live interpreting under the direct supervision of a professional<br />

interpreter and mentor. Note: A grade of B- or better in this course is required for progression<br />

in the program. Prerequisite: Writing Skills II (ENG095) and Reading Skills II (RDG095)<br />

or placements.<br />

AHE-102 Medical Interpreting II 3 Credits<br />

A continuation of Medical Interpreting I, this course includes an in depth discussion of crosscultural<br />

communication including values and attitudes toward non-traditional health beliefs.<br />

Students will examine issues such as giving bad news to patients and dealing with dif�culties<br />

between patients and health care providers. Other topics of discussion include prescription<br />

medicines, measurements for medical dosages, therapies and treatments, and medical<br />

insurance verbiage. Finally, chronic conditions such as asthma/COPD, HIV and diabetes as<br />

well as medical specialties such as mental health and obstetrics/gynecology are discussed.<br />

Prerequisite: Medical Interpreting I (AHE101).<br />

AHE-104 Health Employment Issues 3 Credits<br />

This course introduces students to the challenges and responsibilities of health care and<br />

health care systems. Discussions center on cross-cultural issues, AIDS, drugs and alcohol,<br />

human growth and development, and on-the-job interpersonal relations.<br />

AHE-106 CNA Practicum Patient Care 1 Credit<br />

This course consists of a clinical practicum of 21 hours at a skilled nursing facility to ful�ll<br />

the State Nurse Aide Certi�cation requirement. Additional expenses may include supplies,<br />

equipment, and/or uniforms. Co-requisites: Principles of Clinical Practice (AHE110) and<br />

Patient Care Skills (AHE111).<br />

AHE-108 CNA/Home Health Aide 7 Credits<br />

This course provides the training and skills necessary to take the Certi�ed Nurse Aide and<br />

Home Health Aide exams. The course includes CPR training. There is a 21-hour clinical<br />

practicum at a long-term care facility, which may be scheduled on Saturdays and/or<br />

evenings. The course requires health clearance forms. (Students must assume responsibility<br />

for CNA testing.) Additional expenses may include supplies, equipment, and/or uniforms.<br />

Prerequisites: Writing Skills I (ENG090) and Reading Skills I (RDG090).<br />

AHE-110 Principles of Clinical Practice 3 Credits<br />

This course includes topics in the anatomy and physiology of body systems, diseases and<br />

conditions, ethics in health care, communications, medical terminology and abbreviations,<br />

standard and transmission-based precautions, CPR, and selected clinical skills. The course<br />

is open to Allied Health certi�cate program students only. Additional expenses may include<br />

supplies, equipment, and/or uniforms.<br />

AHE-111 Patient Care Skills 3 Credits<br />

This course covers the patient care theory and skills required to take the Certi�ed Nurse Aide<br />

and Home Health exams. Co-requisites: CNA Practicum (AHE106) and Principles of Clinical<br />

Practice (AHE110).<br />

AHE-112 Medical Assistant Skills 3 Credits<br />

This course covers the skills and theory necessary for medical assistants in hospitals and<br />

clinics. Topics include setting up and assisting for physical and specialty examinations,<br />

minor surgical procedures, routine laboratory tests, and related medical terminology and<br />

abbreviations. Co-requisite: Principles of Clinical Practice (AHE110).<br />

AHE-115 Phlebotomy/Medical Lab Theory 4 Credits<br />

This course teaches the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and the process<br />

of collecting blood samples. This course and Practicum/Phlebotomy Technology (AHE206)<br />

meet the requirements necessary to take one of the phlebotomy certi�cation exams which are<br />

offered by several private certi�cation groups. Certi�cation is the responsibility of the student.<br />

In order to enroll in AHE115, students are required to have a Provider CPR Certi�cation.<br />

Prerequisites: Writing Skills I (ENG090), Foundations of Math (MAT093), and Reading<br />

Skills I (RDG090).<br />

AHE-117 Communication Skills for Health Care 3 Credits<br />

This course provides the student with the skills to communicate effectively as an Allied Health<br />

Professional. The course includes discussions of verbal and non verbal communication,<br />

professional communication and behavior, interviewing techniques, adapting communication<br />

to a patient’s ability to understand, patient education, cultural sensitivity, electronic<br />

communication, and fundamental writing skills.<br />

AHE-201 Advanced Clinical Skills 3 Credits<br />

This course covers advanced theory and skills for the patient care technician and medical<br />

assistant. Students are cross-trained in EKG and Phlebotomy. Prerequisite: Patient Care Skills<br />

(AHE111) or Medical Assisting Skills (AHE112).<br />

AHE-204 Patient Care Technician 3 Credits<br />

This course consists of a clinical practicum at local health care facilities. Students keep a daily<br />

journal and complete a work portfolio. Additional expenses may include supplies, equipment,<br />

and/or uniforms. Prerequisite: Patient Care Skills (AHE111). Co-requisite: Advanced Clinical<br />

Skills (AHE201).<br />

AHE-205 Practicum Medical Assistant 3 Credits<br />

This course consists of a clinical practicum at local health care facilities. Students keep a daily<br />

journal and complete a work portfolio. Additional expenses may include supplies, equipment,<br />

and/or uniforms. Prerequisite: Medical Assisting Skills (AHE112). Co-requisite: Advanced<br />

Clinical Skills (AHE201).<br />

AHE-206 Practicum Phlebotomy Technician 3 Credits<br />

This course consists of a clinical practicum at local health care facilities. Students keep a daily<br />

journal and complete a work portfolio. Additional expenses may include supplies, equipment,<br />

and/or uniforms. Prerequisites: Principles of Clinical Practice (AHE110) and Phlebotomy/<br />

Laboratory Theory (AHE115).<br />

AHE-207 Practicum Lab Assistant 3 Credits<br />

This course consists of a clinical practicum at local health care facilities. Students keep a daily<br />

journal and complete a work portfolio. Additional expenses may include supplies, equipment,<br />

and/or uniforms. Prerequisite: Phlebotomy/Laboratory Theory (AHE115).<br />
