The Language Institute<br />
The <strong>Bunker</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> Language Institute is a unit of the <strong>College</strong> that<br />
coordinates the various student services and programs into an integrated intake<br />
and educational system to meet the needs of English as a Second Language (ESL)<br />
students.<br />
The Language Institute is guided by an advisory group comprised of representatives<br />
from departments that provide programming and support services for ESL students.<br />
The intake process begins in the Assessment Center, Room B118, Charlestown<br />
Campus, where prospective students are assessed, advised and develop an academic<br />
plan based on their individual needs. Students are then oriented to the various<br />
support services that are available through the Multi-Media Multi-Purpose<br />
Language Lab, Tutoring and Academic Support Center, Center for Self-Directed<br />
Learning, International Center, Welcome Back Center, Career Services and<br />
<strong>Community</strong> Education. Special programming includes non-credit and credit ESL<br />
courses, Intensive Language programs, TOEFL preparation, NCLEX preparation<br />
for nurses who earned their credentials outside of the United States, and language<br />
enhancement courses for business professionals.<br />

Academic Skills Development<br />
Math Multi-Media Computer Lab<br />
The Math Multi-Media Computer Lab is a mathematics resource center that is available<br />
to all students enrolled in mathematics courses at BHCC. The primary goal of the<br />
lab is to assist students to become independent learners and in achieving academic<br />
success in mathematics. The Math Multi-Media Computer Lab, equipped with 48<br />
workstations, provides a computer-based environment with access specialized<br />
math software such as Mathtype, TI interactive, Sketchpad, Derive, Maple and<br />
Mathematica. In addition to mathematical software the following are also available:<br />

The Math Multi Media Computer Lab is located in Rooms M102 and M103 and is open<br />
7 days a week.<br />

Multi-Purpose Multi-Media Language Lab<br />
The Multi-Purpose Multi-Media Language Lab at BHCC provides students a hightech<br />
learning environment along with a knowledgeable tutoring staff to guide them<br />
with any aspect of language learning, from speaking, listening, and pronunciation,<br />
to reading, writing, grammar, and punctuation. The lab currently has 8 language<br />
learning software programs, several support staff members, and 34 partitioned<br />
workstations. The objective of the Lab is to help all students improve their language<br />
skills. In addition to software and tutoring, the Lab offers the following support<br />

The Lab is located within the Center for Self Directed Learning in Room E226. During<br />
the fall and spring semesters, the Lab is open seven days a week, with evening hours<br />
Monday through Thursday. During the summer semester, the Lab is open Monday<br />

The Writing Place<br />
The Writing Place is a tutoring service sponsored by the English Department.<br />
Students come to the Writing Place to work with peer tutors on speci�c writing<br />
tasks, including brainstorming ideas for college writing assignments, organizing<br />
rough drafts, revising, editing, and doing library research. The Writing Place tutors<br />
are students who have successfully completed their <strong>College</strong> English program and<br />
are taking a course that prepares them to provide effective feedback and assistance.<br />
Speci�c materials and computer resources are available in the Writing Place to<br />
supplement class instruction and develop composition skills. The Writing Place,<br />
located in Room E142, is open during the fall and spring semesters, Monday through<br />
Friday. Hours may vary from semester to semester, depending on tutor availability.<br />
Students are encouraged to visit the Writing Place in Room E142 to schedule weekly<br />
sessions with a tutor. Tutoring sessions can also be arranged by contacting the<br />
Writing Place at 617-228-3252.<br />
