Description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jeddo Tunnel.<br />

The Jedclo Tunnel Company, Limited, was incorporated November,<br />

1890, <strong>and</strong> is'composed <strong>of</strong> John Markle, president; W. H. Smith, Jr., sec-<br />

retary <strong>and</strong> treasurer, <strong>and</strong> Messrs. E. P. Wilbur, Wm. Lilly, John Markle,<br />

Alvin Markle <strong>and</strong> W. H. Smith, Jr., managers.<br />

The object <strong>of</strong> this company is <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong><br />

a tunnel for drainage purposes, from <strong>the</strong> Little Nescopeck creek in Butler<br />

Valley, Luzerne county. Pa., via Ebervale, Pa., to Jeddo, Pa. Total<br />

length <strong>of</strong> said tunnel about five miles.<br />

The tunnel from Butler Valley to Ebervale is to be eight feet wide<br />

<strong>and</strong> eight feet high, <strong>and</strong> is known as tunnel A, its length will be over<br />

three miles, <strong>and</strong> altoge<strong>the</strong>r this is certainly one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest tunnels<br />

ever projected in mining engineering in <strong>the</strong> coal regions <strong>of</strong> Pennsyl-<br />

vania. The contract was awarded to Charles F. King & Co., <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

began operations in March, 1891.<br />

From Butler Valley, including <strong>the</strong> open cut, <strong>the</strong>re has been driven<br />

during <strong>the</strong> year 1891, 1,433 feet. A slope was sunk on <strong>the</strong> Buck<br />

mountain A'ein'at Ebervale to level <strong>of</strong> tunnel line, said slope was com-<br />

pleted during 1891, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> same is 1,324 feet.<br />

A slope at Lattimer to be sunk on <strong>the</strong> Buck mountain vein was begun<br />

<strong>and</strong> was driven 416 feet during 1891. When <strong>the</strong> Lattimer slope is<br />

completed <strong>the</strong>re will be five headings driving at <strong>the</strong> same time on <strong>the</strong><br />

tunnel, one from Butler Valley, two from <strong>the</strong> Lattimer sloj^e <strong>and</strong> two<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Ebervale slope.<br />

Colliery Improvements Made During <strong>the</strong> Year 1891 in <strong>the</strong> Fifth<br />

District.<br />

Hazleton Mine.—At this colliery a new fan has been erected to venti-<br />

late <strong>the</strong> workings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wharton vein in No. 8 slope. It is an exhaust<br />

fan 16 feet in diameter. Two Hazleton boilers <strong>of</strong> 215 horse power each<br />

have been added to <strong>the</strong> steam producing plant <strong>of</strong> this colliery.<br />

Laurel HiU.—At this colliery an additional boiler (Hazleton) 215<br />

horse power has been erected during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Cranberry.— At <strong>the</strong> breaker <strong>the</strong>re has been added to <strong>the</strong> steam plant<br />

<strong>of</strong> this colliery one Hazleton boiler <strong>of</strong> 215 horse power.<br />

At No. 4 slope an exhaust fan 16 feet in diameter has been placed in<br />

position this year to ventilate <strong>the</strong> workings in <strong>the</strong> Wharton vein.<br />

Lehigh Coal <strong>and</strong> Navigation Company.<br />

Colliery A'o. /, Nesquehoning.—At this collieiy a new stone stable has<br />

been built, providing accommodations for fifty mules. At tunnel No. 1<br />

an exhaust fan fifteen feet in diameter has been erected to ventilate <strong>the</strong><br />

workings <strong>of</strong> this tunnel on <strong>the</strong> south dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein east <strong>of</strong>
