16" cylinder by 24" stroke, has been placed in said slope. A new pump<br />

liouse has been made in Mammoth vein 46' long-, 15' wide by 12' high<br />

<strong>and</strong> timbered throughout to accomodate said pump. Several minor improvements<br />

have been made around <strong>the</strong> breaker for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong>ling" <strong>the</strong> coal coming from <strong>the</strong> Western slope.<br />

Preston No. 3 Colliery.—The tunnel mentioned in my last report as<br />

'g-oing south, has now reached <strong>the</strong> north dip <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein in<br />

Mahanoy basin ; <strong>the</strong> vein is in good condition, dip 54° north. The total<br />

leng-th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tunnel from starting point to present face is 1,100'. This<br />

will give six gangways on <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein, making <strong>the</strong> colliery one<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best in this section. A new duplex pump has been placed at<br />

second level with a steam cylinder 36" diameter <strong>and</strong> 48 " stroke <strong>and</strong> 12 "<br />

ram; twelve boilers 40" diameter, 25' 3" long, <strong>and</strong> twelve boilers 36<br />

diameter, 22' 8" long, with boiler house <strong>and</strong> all necessary connections<br />

have been erected during- <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Beliance Colliery.—A pair <strong>of</strong> link motion hoisting- engines with drum<br />

<strong>and</strong> all necessary connections have been erected at <strong>the</strong> Tender slope.<br />

A new frame engine house, with corrugated iron ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> sides, has been<br />

built over <strong>the</strong> engines. A new water line has been laid from Bear Gap<br />

Water Company's line to <strong>the</strong> colliery tanks. A water level tunnel 65<br />

yards long has been di'iven west <strong>of</strong> breaker, cutting <strong>the</strong> Skidmore vein<br />

5' 10" thick, having- a north dip <strong>of</strong> 25°. A new track has been laid from<br />

above tunnel to head <strong>of</strong> breaker. A new lift has been driven up <strong>the</strong><br />

pitch from No. 5 to No. 4 level. A st<strong>and</strong>ard 9 " X 38" steam pump has<br />

been placed at water level <strong>and</strong> connected to old column line <strong>and</strong> is used<br />

for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> pumping water to <strong>the</strong> jigs located in breaker.<br />

Alaska Shaft.—The Mammoth vein fan has been repaired <strong>and</strong> a new<br />

casing- placed over it. The boilers which supplied <strong>the</strong> steam for fan <strong>and</strong><br />

tender engine have been removed. The steam is now supplied from <strong>the</strong><br />

main steam plant located at shaft. A steam line 380' long <strong>and</strong> 8" in<br />

diameter has been laid from boilers to pumps at floor <strong>of</strong> shaft. A new<br />

steam line 2,300' long <strong>and</strong> 4" in diameter has been laid from boilers to<br />

hoisting engine at bore hole. The engine Avas formerly underground,<br />

but has been replaced by one on <strong>the</strong> surface. Two bore holes 187' longby<br />

6" diameter have been bored to run <strong>the</strong> hoisting rope through. A<br />

tunnel 363' long was driven from <strong>the</strong> southwest gangway <strong>of</strong> Mammoth<br />

vein south to <strong>the</strong> Skidmore, cutting <strong>the</strong> vein 8' 3 " thick, 7' 3" <strong>of</strong> which<br />

is g-ood coal. A new self-acting plane 544' long- was driven in <strong>the</strong> Skidmore<br />

vein. This plane will be worked in two lifts. The drum room <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> grading are noAV completed.<br />

Buck Ridge Colliery.—K new lift <strong>of</strong> 110 yards has been completed<br />

during <strong>the</strong> year on <strong>the</strong> No. 8 vein. A tunnel 15 yards long has been<br />

driven north to No. 9 vein. A gangway has been driven east on No. 9<br />

vein for a distance <strong>of</strong> 236' to a point directly under No. 9 vein slope.<br />

A hole is now being driven up to connect with <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> No. 9 vein<br />
