Emma Bline.—This mine has been kept fully up to <strong>the</strong> requirements<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law. The average quantity <strong>of</strong> air in circulation was 10,853 cubic<br />

feet per minute. The distribution was all ri^^ht. Minino--boss, Adam<br />

Whitehead.<br />

Greenshurg No. 1 Mine.—This mine has been kept in fair condition<br />

duriuo- <strong>the</strong> year. The averag-e quantity <strong>of</strong> air g-oing- out at <strong>the</strong> outlet<br />

per minute Avas 20,308 cubic feet. The distribution <strong>of</strong> this volume was<br />

fairly attended to. Minin<strong>of</strong>-boss, David Clark.<br />

Greenshurg No. '2.—This is a new mine, a drift opening-, situated about<br />

three miles south from Greenshurg-, Westmorel<strong>and</strong> county, on <strong>the</strong> Southwest<br />

Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> P. R. R. The mine is well opened; has two opening's<br />

well timbered, <strong>and</strong> it was <strong>the</strong> intention to sink an air-shaft <strong>and</strong><br />

build a furnace at once. The improvements outside are tipple <strong>and</strong> an<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice. Twenty-eight persons were employed at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> visit. Decem-<br />

Hampton 3Iine.—This mine don't always g-et <strong>the</strong> attention it should<br />

have. There is always plenty <strong>of</strong> air at <strong>the</strong> outlet to g"ive each person<br />

employed in <strong>the</strong> mine nearly 200 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air per minute if properly<br />

distributed. Mining--boss, Edg-ar Thompson.<br />

HeinpfieJd Slopo.—An air-shaft was sunk at this mine this year <strong>and</strong> a<br />

12' fan erected. The fan was built by <strong>the</strong> Novelty Manufacturing- Com-<br />

pany <strong>of</strong> Irwin, from plans g-iven by A. N. Humphreys, mining- eng-ineer<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Westmorel<strong>and</strong> Coal Company'. The fan gives g-reat satisfaction.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong> fan has been erected I have measured on an average 51,000<br />

cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air going in at <strong>the</strong> inlet per minute, nearly 468 cubic feet<br />

per minute for each person employed in <strong>the</strong> mine. A mining-boss that<br />

can't keep his mine well ventilated with that quantity <strong>of</strong> air should quit<br />

<strong>and</strong> go at something else. Mining-boss, Levi Ludwick.<br />

Hecla Nos. 1 <strong>and</strong> '2 Shafts. .<br />

No. 1 Shaft.—This mine is in good condition, with an average <strong>of</strong><br />

39,190 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air going in at <strong>the</strong> inlet per minute. This volume<br />

is divided into two currents <strong>and</strong> well distributed through <strong>the</strong> mine.<br />

Mining-boss, William Dean.<br />

No. '2 Shaft.—The mine is ventilated at present with exhaust steam,<br />

which gives an average <strong>of</strong> 18,960 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air per minute. This<br />

quantity is fairl}^ distributed through <strong>the</strong> mine. The company is erect-<br />

ing a 30' fan, which it will have ready in a short time. This will be <strong>the</strong><br />

largest fan in <strong>the</strong> district. It has also built a neat pump-house. Miningboss,<br />

No. 1.—There was scarcely any work done in this mine during <strong>the</strong><br />
