Mammoth vein, south dip. The vein is in fair condition. A tunnel is<br />

being driven from Mammoth vein, south dip, to Buck mountain vein,<br />

south dip ; tunnel is in, 133 yards. A jig house 54'X4:5' deep by 50' 9"<br />

high, containing 5 jigs <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> necessary connections, has been<br />

erected for <strong>the</strong> better preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coal. An engine, 14" cylinder<br />

by 24" stroke, has been erected to supply power for <strong>the</strong>se jigs.<br />

Merriam Colliery.—The tunnel being driven across <strong>the</strong> Mahanoy<br />

basin from Mammoth vein, south dip, to Mammoth vein, north dip, has<br />

cut <strong>the</strong> vein at a distance <strong>of</strong> 6031 yards. An underground slope has<br />

been sunk in what is known as Big Run basin. The slope is down a<br />

distance <strong>of</strong> 137§ yards <strong>and</strong> is completed. A steam pipe way 8' wide by<br />

5 5' high has been driven from <strong>the</strong> second to <strong>the</strong> first level, <strong>the</strong> total distance<br />

being 165 yards. A tunnel 18| yards long has been driven from<br />

Mammoth vein plane gangway to top split <strong>of</strong> same vein, cutting <strong>the</strong><br />

vein in fair condition. A new water line has been laid, connecting with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bear Gap Water Company's line which gives <strong>the</strong> colliery an ample<br />

supply <strong>of</strong> pure water for all purposes. In addition to <strong>the</strong> above, several<br />

minor improvements have been made both in <strong>and</strong> outside at this colliery.<br />

Potts Colliery.—A pair <strong>of</strong> link motion engines, 18" cylinder by 36"<br />

stroke, with drum <strong>and</strong> all connections complete, have been erected to<br />

hoist from Primrose slope. A new engine house has been built for<br />

same. The Primrose slope is npw completed, <strong>the</strong> total depth being 373<br />

yards. The tunnel connecting <strong>the</strong> Mammoth <strong>and</strong> Primrose veins is also<br />

completed, <strong>the</strong> distance being 109 yards. A new fan, 18' diameter with<br />

fan engine <strong>and</strong> all connections, has been erected for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> ven-<br />

tilating <strong>the</strong> Primrose vein. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above have been enclosed <strong>and</strong> in<br />

addition a new engine house has been built over said fan engine. The<br />

breaker has been rebuilt <strong>and</strong> remodeled <strong>and</strong> is now fitted throughout<br />

with <strong>the</strong> most im^Droved machinery. The dirt plane has been rebuilt<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> machinery repaired, all <strong>of</strong> which is now in good condition. Two<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard 9" X 38" steam pumps have been erected for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

supplying water to jigs located in breaker. One new nest <strong>of</strong> four boilers,<br />

34" diameter, 30' long, has been put in position ; also two new nests <strong>of</strong><br />

two tubular boilers, each 6' diameter by 18' long with all necessary con-<br />

nections, have been added to <strong>the</strong> steam plant.<br />

Bast Colliery.—The rebuilding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> breaker was completed during<br />

<strong>the</strong> year 1891. It has been fitted up with <strong>the</strong> latest improved machinery<br />

<strong>and</strong> is now one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best equipped breakers owned by <strong>the</strong> coal <strong>and</strong><br />

iron company.<br />

North AsJil<strong>and</strong> Colliery.—The Western slope has been extended 100<br />

yards for a new lift. This makes <strong>the</strong> total distance 359 1 yards. The<br />

airway has also been extended, <strong>and</strong> now has an area <strong>of</strong> 96 square feet.<br />

A new frame fan engine house has been erected; also a new fan 15'<br />

diameter with engine <strong>and</strong> all necessary connections complete. This fan<br />

will ventilate <strong>the</strong> workings in Western slope. One Allison steam pump,
