The above named twelve persons obtained certificates <strong>of</strong> competency<br />

at <strong>the</strong> examination held during <strong>the</strong> week commencing January 26, 1892.<br />

All received second-grade certificates except John Baird <strong>and</strong> John<br />

Morris, <strong>the</strong> two last named, <strong>the</strong>y received certificates which entitled<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to boss in any <strong>bituminous</strong> mine.<br />

The law requiring <strong>the</strong> aspirant for mine-boss to liold a " certificate <strong>of</strong><br />

competency " has been <strong>the</strong> means <strong>of</strong> awakening <strong>the</strong> minds <strong>of</strong> many to <strong>the</strong><br />

study <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> science <strong>of</strong> mining, so that a subject that was knoAvn to only<br />

a few people previous to 1885, is now being acquired by hundreds in each<br />

mining district, <strong>and</strong> in consequence every examination has large numbers<br />

<strong>of</strong> applicants for certificates. There were in attendance at <strong>the</strong> Eighth<br />

district examination, January 2G, 1892, 52 applicants, 12 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, or about<br />

23 per cent., as named before were successful.<br />

already in <strong>the</strong> field, that many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m being anxious for positions, <strong>of</strong>fer
