All persons in <strong>the</strong> mine are using- <strong>the</strong> locked safety lamp, <strong>and</strong> it is <strong>the</strong><br />

intention, in <strong>the</strong> near future, to use electricity to lig-ht <strong>the</strong> shaft bottom.<br />

The mine is now in first-class condition. Mining-boss, James Eaton.<br />

BIcClure Coke Com2mny 31ines.<br />

Donnelly No. 1.—The ventilation in this mine was ra<strong>the</strong>r defective<br />

during- <strong>the</strong> year. The average quantity <strong>of</strong> air going out at <strong>the</strong> outlet<br />

per minute was 7,887 cubic feet. On my last visit a fan 12' in diameter<br />

had been erected, size <strong>of</strong> engine 8" X 14". The monthly report <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mine-boss for December showed that <strong>the</strong> fan had been started, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

air measurement at <strong>the</strong> outlet indicated 28,560 cubic feet per minute.<br />

This quantity is ample if properly distributed. Drainage all right.<br />

Bomielhj No. '2.—The ventilation in this mine has been ra<strong>the</strong>r defect-<br />

ive during <strong>the</strong> year. The average amount <strong>of</strong> air in circulation per<br />

minute was 5,260 cubic feet. The drainage was all right. Mining-boss,<br />

William Alex<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

Mayfield.—This mine has been kept in a healthy condition during <strong>the</strong><br />

year, with an average <strong>of</strong> 9,540 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air in circulation per minute.<br />

Mining-boss, Peter P. Glenn.<br />

Buckeye.—The ventilation was ra<strong>the</strong>r defective during- <strong>the</strong> summer<br />

months. The company erected a fan 12' iu diameter, engines 8 "Xl4 ",<br />

attached direct to <strong>the</strong> fan. On my visit after <strong>the</strong> fan was started I<br />

measured 83,600 cubic feet per minute going- out at <strong>the</strong> outlet, when <strong>the</strong><br />

fan was speeded to 80 revolutions per minute. The mine is in a healthy<br />

condition now, <strong>and</strong> with proper care it can be kept in that condition,<br />

because <strong>the</strong>re is ample means for ventilation. Mining-boss, George J.<br />

Burns.<br />

Bessemer <strong>and</strong> Rising Sun <strong>Mines</strong>.—These mines have only worked thirty-<br />

three days this year.<br />

Enterprise Mine.—Hhi^ mine has only worked a few days.<br />

Hazlett Shaft—This mine was iu fair condition at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> my<br />

visit.<br />

Hazlett Slo2Je.—This mine has worked but a very short time this year,<br />

<strong>and</strong> was not working at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> my visit. Mining-boss, Alex<strong>and</strong>er<br />

Davenport.<br />

Mullin.—This mine has been kept in very fair condition during- <strong>the</strong><br />

year. The average quantity <strong>of</strong> air going out at <strong>the</strong> outlet per minute<br />

was 11,733 cubic feet. The quantity was fairly distributed throug-h <strong>the</strong><br />

mine. Miningf-boss, Hugh Boss.<br />

Union.—On my first visit to this mine <strong>the</strong> ventilation was very de-<br />

fective, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> company stopped operations for a few days in order to<br />

build a furnace. Size <strong>of</strong> furnace, length <strong>of</strong> arch, 20', fire bed, 6'x6',<br />

36 square feet. The air shaft is 18' deep, with a stack 26' high. On<br />

my subsequent visits 1 measured an average <strong>of</strong> 13,160 cubic feet <strong>of</strong> air
