At Shen<strong>and</strong>oah City colliery <strong>the</strong> main hoisting" shaft was south from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mammoth to <strong>the</strong> Buck Mountain vein, a distance <strong>of</strong> one hundred<br />

<strong>and</strong> sixty feet ; distance from surface to <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein, two hundred<br />

<strong>and</strong> ninety-four feet ; total length <strong>of</strong> shaft four hundred <strong>and</strong> fifty -four<br />

feet. Buck Mountain was cut 12' 1 " thick with 9' 4' <strong>of</strong> coal. An airway<br />

three hundred feet long was driven from <strong>the</strong> shaft level east gang-way<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Plank Ridge old Buck Mountain workings.<br />

At West Shen<strong>and</strong>oah colliery <strong>the</strong> hoisting slope in Buck Mountain<br />

vein is being- extended, <strong>and</strong> is now down one hundred <strong>and</strong> seventy yards<br />

below <strong>the</strong> third lift.<br />

At Turkey Run colliery a new underground slope is being sunk from<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> old Mammoth vein slope through rock <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Seven-foot<br />

vein. From <strong>the</strong> knuckle <strong>of</strong> slope to bottom slate <strong>of</strong> bottom split is<br />

forty-six feet. From bottom slate <strong>of</strong> bottom split to top slate <strong>of</strong> Seven-<br />

foot vein is two hundred <strong>and</strong> twenty-five feet, <strong>the</strong> estimated leng-th <strong>of</strong><br />

slope is about ten hundred <strong>and</strong> twenty-one feet from <strong>the</strong> knuckle to a<br />

point three hundred <strong>and</strong> forty-five feet below West Shen<strong>and</strong>oah colliery<br />

third lift gangway.<br />

At Hammond colliery a sloj^e has been sunk in <strong>the</strong> Buck Mountain<br />

vein to second lift below water level, a distance <strong>of</strong> two hundred <strong>and</strong><br />

eighty -four <strong>and</strong> one-third yards, <strong>and</strong> timbered with a nineteen foot collar,<br />

twenty -three feet, <strong>and</strong> eight feet <strong>of</strong> rail. An airway eighty-nine yards<br />

long <strong>and</strong> twelve feet wide has been driven from second lift west gang-way<br />

to first lift gangway.<br />

An airway one hundred <strong>and</strong> three yards long <strong>and</strong> twelve feet wide<br />

from second lift west gangway to first lift gangway. An airway ninetyone<br />

yards long- <strong>and</strong> twelve wide from first lift Buck Mountain, to No. 1<br />

West Connor drift is in course <strong>of</strong> construction.<br />

The new Buck Mountain slope is used for lowering <strong>and</strong> hoisting- men,<br />

<strong>and</strong> material, such as timber rails, etc.<br />

At Girard colliery a tunnel thirty-one yards long (called No. 4 west)<br />

from second lift Skidmore vein north dip west gangway to Mammoth<br />

vein north dip. A monkey tunnel thirty-two yards long- has been driven<br />

(nearly over above main west tunnel No. 4) from monkey gangway Skidmore<br />

vein, north dip, to Mammoth vein, dip <strong>of</strong> vein 75° north. A tunnel<br />

(No. 4 east) nineteen yards long- has been driven north (from a point<br />

nineteen hundred <strong>and</strong> sixty feet east <strong>of</strong> Tender slope) from Skidmore<br />

vein east gangwa\% north dip, to Mammoth vein, north dip. A monkey<br />

tunnel fifty-eight yards long (called No. 4 east), (<strong>and</strong> nearly over No. 4<br />

main east tunnel) has been driven from monkey g-angway in Skidmore<br />

vein to south dip <strong>of</strong> Mammoth vein. A monkey tunnel (called No. 5<br />

east) nineteen <strong>and</strong> tAvo-thirds yards long has been driven from monkey<br />

g-angway, Skidmore vein, north dip, to Mammoth vein, north dip.<br />

Section No. 1 east tunnel has been extended seventy-one yards to<br />

Buck Mountain vein, south dip, making- total length <strong>of</strong> tunnel from Skid-
