<strong>of</strong> fact <strong>the</strong> industry was beg-ua at Plymouth thirteen years before, <strong>and</strong><br />

for nine years prior to <strong>the</strong> beginnin<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coal business on <strong>the</strong> Lehigh<br />

river <strong>the</strong> annual shipments on <strong>the</strong> Susquehanna were considerably in<br />

excess <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first year's product <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lehig-h region." Mr. Pearce<br />

states, that up to 1820 " <strong>the</strong> total amount <strong>of</strong> coal sent from Wyoming is<br />

reckoned at eighty -five hundred tons," <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same author states that<br />

Colonel Washington Lee, in 1820 " mined <strong>and</strong> sent to Baltimore one<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> tons, which he sold at eight dollars per ton." Coal had been<br />

shipped to Baltimore <strong>and</strong> sold <strong>the</strong>re prior to that date by <strong>the</strong> Smith<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Most authors have heret<strong>of</strong>ore recorded <strong>the</strong> coal shipments <strong>of</strong> this<br />

region as commencing in 1829 when seven thous<strong>and</strong> tons were shipped<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Delaware <strong>and</strong> Hudson Canal Company, but <strong>the</strong>y record <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />

duction as commencing in 1820, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> product as eight hundred tons.<br />

Our author, Mr. Kulp, has showa conclusively that <strong>the</strong> coal trade had<br />

been carried on for several years prior to 1820, <strong>and</strong> presents <strong>the</strong> following<br />

table as a correct record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> business from <strong>the</strong> year 1807 to 1820 in-<br />

clusively :<br />
