Coal Glen mines, consisting- <strong>of</strong> two separate openings, are owned <strong>and</strong><br />

operated by <strong>the</strong> Jefferson Coal Company. Considerable improvements<br />

have been made at <strong>the</strong>se mines. A fan has been erected on <strong>the</strong> south<br />

side to clear <strong>the</strong> hauling- way or engine road from locomotive smoke.<br />

This prevents <strong>the</strong> smoke reaching <strong>the</strong> working portions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine.<br />

They have also impi-oved <strong>the</strong> drainage. Austin Blakeslee is superintendent<br />

<strong>and</strong> J. M. Jones is mine-boss.<br />

Beachtree mines, consisting <strong>of</strong> three separate openings, only one <strong>of</strong><br />

which is now being operated, are in very good condition. They are<br />

owned <strong>and</strong> operated by <strong>the</strong> Rochester <strong>and</strong> Pittsburg- Coal <strong>and</strong> Iron<br />

Company. David Fleming is superintendent <strong>and</strong> J. T. Smith is mine-<br />

boss.<br />

Loudon mine, owned <strong>and</strong> operated by <strong>the</strong> Falls Creek Coal Mining-<br />

Company, was found to be in good condition. The same company also<br />

owns <strong>and</strong> operates <strong>the</strong> Dixon mine in Clearfield county. It is also in<br />

good condition, both as to ventilation <strong>and</strong> drainage. John Morrison is<br />

superintendent <strong>and</strong> William Patterson is mine-boss at both mines.<br />

Brock mines, located at Brockwayville, operated by <strong>the</strong> Brock Coal<br />

Company, have been opened during <strong>the</strong> year. Ventilation fair. Bobert<br />

Dick is mine boss <strong>and</strong> E. Z. Griggs is superintendent.<br />

Clearfield County <strong>Mines</strong>.<br />

Williamsport mines, consisting <strong>of</strong> three separate openings, owned <strong>and</strong><br />

operated by <strong>the</strong> Clearfield Coal Company, are in good condition. They<br />

have built a new furnace <strong>and</strong> improved <strong>the</strong> drainage very much during<strong>the</strong><br />

year. A. K. Jacobs is superintendent <strong>and</strong> James P. Eddy is mine<br />

boss.<br />

Rochester slope mines, consisting- <strong>of</strong> two separate openings, owned<br />

<strong>and</strong> operated by Bell, Lewis & Yates, are in fair condition. They have<br />

worked fairl}" well during <strong>the</strong> year. John Reed is superintendent <strong>and</strong><br />

William Bolane is mine boss.<br />

S<strong>and</strong>y Lick mine, owned <strong>and</strong> operated by Bell, Lewis & Yates, has<br />

worked nearly half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year. Operations at present are suspended.<br />

Helvetia mines, owned <strong>and</strong> operated by Adrian Islein, have been<br />

opened during- <strong>the</strong> year. These mines are equipped with electric coal<br />

cutting machines. They have erected a twenty -foot Guibal fan, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ventilation <strong>and</strong> drainage is very g-ood. John McLeavy is super-<br />

intendent.<br />

McKean County <strong>Mines</strong>.<br />

Instanter mine, owned by <strong>the</strong> Buffalo Coal Company <strong>and</strong> operated by<br />

John F. Keating-, has worked nearly full time. Ventilation is good, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> drainage is not so good. James Maloney is mine-boss.
