Elk County <strong>Mines</strong>.<br />

The Dag-US mines, ten in number, located at Dag-us, are operated bj-<br />

<strong>the</strong> Northwestern Mining- <strong>and</strong> Exchange Oompanj'^, <strong>and</strong> were found in<br />

g-ood condition. A new slope opening is being made by this company<br />

which is not yet completed. An accident occurred on May 8 at this<br />

slope by which George Morse lost his life, <strong>the</strong> details <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

given in <strong>the</strong> accompanying letter or report <strong>of</strong> B. Hamilton, engineer to<br />

D. Robertson, superintendent. This slope not being connected nor intended<br />

to connect with any o<strong>the</strong>r mine workings, was not subject to in-<br />

spection under <strong>the</strong> law.<br />

Mead Run mines, two in number, are also operated by <strong>the</strong> Northwestern<br />

Mining <strong>and</strong> Exchange Company, <strong>and</strong> are in good condition. A<br />

double Murphy fan has been erected at <strong>the</strong>se mines during <strong>the</strong> year,<br />

which produces excellent ventilation. Roger Hampson is mine foreman<br />

<strong>and</strong> D. Robertson is superintendent.<br />

Whitehead mines, operated by <strong>the</strong> Elk Coal <strong>and</strong> Coke Company, have<br />

done but little work during <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Cascade mines Nos. 5 <strong>and</strong> 6, operated by Kaul & Hall, have<br />

worked throughout <strong>the</strong> year. No. 6 is a new opening made to facilitate<br />

haulage from <strong>the</strong> same field in which No. 5 is operating. Martin Dippold<br />

is mine-boss <strong>and</strong> Andrew Kaul is superintendent.<br />

Hazel Dell mine, operated by Kaul & Hall, is in fair condition.<br />

St. Marys mines, comprising five separate openings, are operated by<br />

<strong>the</strong> St. Marys Coal Company. They were found to be in good condi-<br />

tion, both as to ventilation <strong>and</strong> drainage, <strong>and</strong> have worked throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> year. Joseph Eddy mine-boss, assisted by Richard Swanson, J. B.<br />

Coryell is superintendent.<br />

Tannerdale mine, operated by <strong>the</strong> St. Marys Coal Company, w^orked<br />

during a ])ortion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year <strong>and</strong> is now suspended.<br />

Shawmut mines at Edgar, were sold during <strong>the</strong> year by Brinker &,<br />

Jones to Messrs. Smith, Kirkpatrick & Cartwright, who are now opering<br />

<strong>the</strong> mines under <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shawmut Coal Company. The<br />

property consists <strong>of</strong> 6,100 acres <strong>and</strong> has a capacity <strong>of</strong> fifty cars a day.<br />

The mines are equipped with electric mining machines. The new company<br />

is still enlarging <strong>the</strong> capacitj'' <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mines <strong>and</strong> has built ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

switch to connect with <strong>the</strong> Toby Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Erie railroad. E. Z.<br />

Griggs is superintendent <strong>and</strong> T. J. Ma<strong>the</strong>ws mine-boss.<br />

Elbow mine, located at Oyster, is a new mine just being opened up<br />

<strong>and</strong> is operated by <strong>the</strong> Noble Coal Company. E. Z. Griggs is superin-<br />

tendent.<br />

Jefferson County <strong>Mines</strong>.<br />

Clarion mines, owned <strong>and</strong> operated by <strong>the</strong> Northwestern Mining <strong>and</strong><br />

Exchange Company, are in good condition. Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 <strong>and</strong> 7<br />

mines have worked fairly well during <strong>the</strong> year. No. 4 has not done quite<br />

so well. David Robertson is superintendent.
