Q. When you wei-e making- January survey, did you say anything<br />

about putting in breast No. 12 ?<br />

A. No, sir; I did not sketch No. 12 in January. I put ano<strong>the</strong>r breast<br />

in <strong>the</strong>re. I was looking for tliat gangway to go through an opening.<br />

Q. Did you make <strong>the</strong> survey from No. 8 slope from <strong>the</strong> surface 1<br />

A. I think so.<br />

Q. Did you ever try to make a tie in No. 1 slope through Wharton<br />

vein ?<br />

A. Yes, sir ; that was a test <strong>of</strong> our own work. That was to make <strong>the</strong><br />

steam hole.<br />

Q. According to <strong>the</strong>ir report to you <strong>the</strong>y came out correct ?<br />

A. Yes, sir.<br />

Q. Then in <strong>the</strong> survey <strong>of</strong> No. 1 slope you had a chance to test that<br />

survey from your own surveys did you not ?<br />

A. Yes.<br />

Q. Even from <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> No. 7 to <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> No. 1, to <strong>the</strong> outer<br />

hole, you had a chance to see that your map was correct ?<br />

A. I have never made any surveys in relation to No. 8 since it was<br />

ab<strong>and</strong>oned.<br />

Q. Did I underst<strong>and</strong> you to say you did not know <strong>the</strong> pumps were<br />

taken out <strong>of</strong> No. 8 ?<br />

A. I have no recollection <strong>of</strong> ever seeing <strong>the</strong> pumps in No. 8 at all.<br />

Q. Don't recollect that <strong>the</strong>y told you that <strong>the</strong> last survey you made in<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> final survey ?<br />

A. I don't recollect.<br />

Q. You underst<strong>and</strong> on that point in <strong>the</strong> surveys before a mine is<br />

ab<strong>and</strong>oned ?<br />

A. It must be surveyed <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey verified.<br />

Q. I want to know if you were notified <strong>of</strong> that ?<br />

A. No, sir.<br />

Q. Have you ever received notice to make any special surveys ?<br />

A. Yes, for o<strong>the</strong>r purposes.<br />

Q. No special workings <strong>of</strong> underground surveys ?<br />

A. I always made surveys everywhere.<br />

Q. Do you know when this No. 8 was ab<strong>and</strong>oned ?<br />

A. I hare no record.<br />

Q. Were you never required to put old No. 8 on <strong>the</strong> map ?<br />

A. We put elevations on <strong>the</strong> greater part <strong>of</strong> our work.<br />

A. They were put on at my request.<br />

Q. Mr. Womelsdorf, what was <strong>the</strong> distance between No. 8 gangway<br />

<strong>and</strong> No. 11 breast? What does your map show?
