A. My duties are to direct <strong>and</strong> instruct <strong>the</strong> inside workiuo:s, being<br />

governed by a map.<br />

Q. How long have you been directing this work?<br />

A. Since December, 1881 as general superintendent. As mine foreman<br />

since <strong>the</strong> year 1873.<br />

Q. Was gangway No. 10 driven under your direction?<br />

A. It was.<br />

Q. Did you direct <strong>the</strong> working <strong>of</strong> No. 10 gangway west?<br />

A. I did, sir.<br />

Q. Do you know anything about No. 8 gangway ?<br />

A. Yes, sir. Had <strong>the</strong> opening <strong>of</strong> No. 8.<br />

Q. Full directions?<br />

A. Yes, sir; had charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work when it was opened <strong>and</strong> when it<br />

was ab<strong>and</strong>oned. It was in four lifts.<br />

Q. When did you ab<strong>and</strong>on No. 8 ?<br />

A. May 30, 1888.<br />

Q. Was that before or after <strong>the</strong> last survey ?<br />

A. Long after.<br />

Q. Do you mean by ab<strong>and</strong>onment that you stopped taking out coal<br />

<strong>and</strong> took out pumps?<br />

A. Yes, sir.<br />

Q. Was <strong>the</strong> east gangway driven after <strong>the</strong> last survey ?<br />

A. None whatever.<br />

Q. When you had concluded to ab<strong>and</strong>on No. 8, did you have it surveyed,<br />

as is required?<br />

A. Had it surveyed square to <strong>the</strong> face with my own light against <strong>the</strong><br />

face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gangway.<br />

Q. No. 8 gangway east ?<br />

A. Yes, sir.<br />

Q. You say <strong>the</strong>re was no more cutting or work done in <strong>the</strong> east gangway<br />

after that survey ?<br />

A. I certify to such.<br />

Q. You state that No. 10 west gangway was driven under your direc-<br />

tion. Kow, did you anticipate any trouble from <strong>the</strong> water in No. 8<br />

when you drove that gangway ?<br />

A. None whatever, sir, as my knowledge led me to know that we had<br />

sufficient pillar between us <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> gangway.<br />

Q. What do you call sufficient?<br />

A. I call anything from forty (40) to fifty (50) feet sufficient.<br />

Q. Did <strong>the</strong> map show from forty to fifty feet ?<br />

A. The map showed me from fifty to sixty feet.<br />

Q. And you drove <strong>the</strong> gangway ?<br />

A. Yes.<br />

Q. Is this <strong>the</strong> map ?<br />

A. I had access to that map <strong>and</strong> also to a map at home.
