A new Hue <strong>of</strong> colamn pipe 1,730 feet in lengtli has been placed in this<br />

slope, <strong>and</strong> a 14-inch plunder pump formerly used at <strong>the</strong> upper lift has<br />

been placed at <strong>the</strong> lower lift.<br />

No. ^ Slojx.—This new slope, which is located at <strong>the</strong> eastern end <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> property, has been opened to <strong>the</strong> basin in tlie Buck mountain vein,<br />

<strong>and</strong> g-angways driven 800 feet east <strong>and</strong> 530 feet west during <strong>the</strong> year<br />

past. A pair <strong>of</strong> double hoisting engines with friction drum have been<br />

set up here, <strong>and</strong> four cylinder boilers 36 inches in diameter <strong>and</strong> 36 feet<br />

long have been placed in ])osition <strong>and</strong> connected with a 50-foot iron<br />

smoke stack. An exhaust fan has been erected <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong> machinery<br />

is substantially housed. A duplex pump has been put at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong><br />

slope, having steam cylinders 26 by 48 inches with 12 by 48 inch<br />

plungers <strong>and</strong> provided with suitable steam <strong>and</strong> column pipe.<br />

This company during <strong>the</strong> past year has spent considerable money in<br />

digging ditches <strong>and</strong> channels to conduct surface water so as to prevent<br />

its going down <strong>the</strong> cave holes on <strong>the</strong> outcrop <strong>and</strong> having to be pumped<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine at one slope, Avith <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong>, perhaps, <strong>the</strong> larger part<br />

it returning to <strong>the</strong> sump <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next slope, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Avork covers more<br />

than two miles<strong>of</strong> such channels <strong>and</strong> ditches <strong>and</strong> represents money saved<br />

to <strong>the</strong> company.<br />

CM. Dodson d: Co., Beaver Brook colliery.—This company has added<br />

two forty horse power, Dimmick ct Smith boilers to its steam plant,<br />

besides leng<strong>the</strong>ning out ano<strong>the</strong>r set <strong>of</strong> boilers from 36 to 42 feet <strong>and</strong> adding<br />

" mud dams."<br />

No. 11 slope has been opened up about 300 feet on <strong>the</strong> north pitch <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> north basin, but has not yet reached <strong>the</strong> basin. The total depth<br />

from <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> slope is 378 feet, Avith an average pitch <strong>of</strong> 60°. To<br />

avoid all danger from Avater in <strong>the</strong> overflowing Wharton vein workings,<br />

<strong>the</strong> company has Avisely decided to pump <strong>the</strong> Avater out before sinking<br />

this Buck mountain slope any far<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

George H. Myers d' Co., Yorktoion.—M <strong>the</strong> No. 1 slope <strong>of</strong> this colliery<br />

a shaft has been sunk inside from <strong>the</strong> Mammoth vein to <strong>the</strong> Buck<br />

mountain vein, a depth <strong>of</strong> 278 feet 7 inches. It cuts <strong>the</strong> Wharton vein<br />

at a distance <strong>of</strong> 116 feet from <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> Mammoth vein to bottom <strong>of</strong><br />

Wharton vein. The Wharton vein is iound 9 feet thick <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Buck<br />

mountain vein 10 feet thick. The shaft is provided with safety gates<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Mammoth <strong>and</strong> Wharton veins Avhich are well arranged. The<br />

hosting engines are placed on <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rope passes doAvn<br />

through a six-inch bore-hole drilled for <strong>the</strong> purpose.<br />

M. S. Kemmerer d'. Co., S<strong>and</strong>y Bun.—At this colliery a tunnel 120 feet<br />

long Avas driven through <strong>the</strong> rock to <strong>the</strong> Avorkings <strong>of</strong> No. 1 slope, to<br />

drain a portion <strong>of</strong> those Avorkings, <strong>and</strong> to cut <strong>of</strong>f 90 feet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

pumps in <strong>the</strong> slope.<br />

No. 11 slope has been opened from <strong>the</strong> first lift to <strong>the</strong> basin, a depth<br />

<strong>of</strong> 450 feet from <strong>the</strong> surface, to get back <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scpieeze in old No. 4<br />

Avorkings.
