It will be seen by this account current that coal was sold at that time<br />

by <strong>the</strong> chaldron, equal to thirty-six bushels, or nearly a ton <strong>and</strong> one-<br />

third per chaldron. The sales, <strong>the</strong>refore, for <strong>the</strong> New York market, in<br />

1812, by this firm, were nearly two hundred tons.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> article referred to by Georg-e B. Kulp, Esq., on " Coal, its Anti-<br />

quity, Discovery <strong>and</strong> Early Development in <strong>the</strong> Wyoming- Valley, " <strong>the</strong><br />

author fur<strong>the</strong>r states: "It seems to be <strong>the</strong> common belief that <strong>the</strong> anthra-<br />

cite coal trade had its rise on <strong>the</strong> Lehigh in <strong>the</strong> year 1820, yet as a matter
