that bad?” and ends Maestoso on “I’m the President of the United States (Custer enters<br />

President Grant’s office). Brass are obviously emphasized here. Ends on the C#/E#/G#<br />

(C# maj) tonality. So in Bar 31 Pos play Great octave G#/small octave C#/E#/G#<br />

rinforzando quarter notes tied to 8 th notes (followed by an 8 th rest and then a half rest held<br />

fermata). Trumpets play middle C#/E#/G# [written D#/Fx/A#] notes in the same pattern.<br />

Etc.<br />

-Reel 11/4 Misterioso Slowly in C time, 20 pages, 80 bars. Cue [40] Bar scene<br />

(no soldiers in place/confrontation with Sharpe). The next cue [40] is long, ending on<br />

spitting.<br />

-Reel 12/2 [42] 20 pages, 78 bars. Page 17 & 18 correspond to the goodbye kiss<br />

(very strings dominant!). Cue # 23667. Friedhofer did not orchestrate this cue (many he<br />

didn’t). I think it may be orchestrated in Max’s own hands but I’m not sure. The cue<br />

starts Allegro as the first bugle plays a two-bar phrase followed by the 2 nd bugle. Four<br />

snare drums are also rolled on a whole note held fermata. The tempo-marking in Bar 3<br />

appears to be Lento espr as Custer says to Libby, “Well, let’s see now, anything I’ve<br />

forgotten?” The strings are soli, and the 12 violins play the beautiful love theme. After a<br />

“3” triplet value 8 th rest, the con sord violins sound p Line 1 A to B triplet value 8ths up<br />

to Line 2 C# quarter note tied to 8 th note legato down to B 8 th to A dotted 8 th to F# 16 th<br />

crescendo to (Bar 4) same Line 1 F# quarter note to E half note decrescendo to E-F# 8ths<br />

to (Bar 5) G half note tied to 8 th note to A 8 th down to F# dotted 8 th to E 16 th to (Bar 6) F#<br />

dotted half note tied to 8 th and 16 th not (followed by a 16 th rest). The con sord violas (top<br />

staff) play p small octave A whole note legato to (Bar 4) B whole note to (Bar 5) Line 1<br />

D down to small octave Bb quarter notes to A half note tied to whole note next bar.<br />

Bottom staff violas play small octave F# whole note to (Bar 4) G whole note to (Bar 5)<br />
