Aliens not born <strong>in</strong> Germany may apply <strong>for</strong> citizenship after six years of lawful residence <strong>in</strong> the<br />

country. For <strong>refugees</strong> recognised under Section 16a of the Constitution, this eight-year period<br />

runs from the submission of their <strong>asylum</strong> application. Citizenship is granted under certa<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>conditions</strong>, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g renunciation of the previous nationality, sufficient knowledge of the German<br />

language <strong>and</strong> sufficient resources (the applicant must not be dependent on <strong>social</strong> benefits).<br />

Repatriation<br />

Both categories of <strong>refugees</strong>, persons granted Duldung <strong>and</strong> <strong>asylum</strong> <strong>seekers</strong> who have withdrawn<br />

their application are usually eligible <strong>for</strong> assistance towards repatriation.<br />

This f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance only covers travel expenses <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes a maximum of DEM 150 [EUR<br />

76.7] <strong>for</strong> extra luggage, <strong>and</strong> an allowance of about DEM 150 [EUR 76.7] per adult <strong>and</strong> DEM 75<br />

[EUR 38.3] per child, up to a maximum of DEM 750 [EUR 383] per family.<br />

In addition assistance may be given towards transport costs once <strong>in</strong> the country of orig<strong>in</strong> from the<br />

arrival po<strong>in</strong>t to the f<strong>in</strong>al dest<strong>in</strong>ation.<br />

There is no right of return after repatriation.<br />
