F<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance<br />

The decree sett<strong>in</strong>g out details of the <strong>social</strong> assistance to which <strong>asylum</strong> <strong>seekers</strong> are <strong>legal</strong>ly<br />

entitled accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Asylum Law has not yet been passed. It is impossible to predict to what<br />

extent support will be modified under this regulation once it comes <strong>in</strong>to effect.<br />

Asylum <strong>seekers</strong> are entitled to a basic allowance to cover food <strong>and</strong> other m<strong>in</strong>or liv<strong>in</strong>g expenses.<br />

Such allowances are considered as an advance on the various benefits (child benefit, education<br />

allowance, etc.), which the applicant will be entitled to receive –retrospectively from the date of<br />

submission of the application – when he/she will be granted refugee status. The amounts granted<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the procedure will be deducted from the allowances paid after recognition of refugee<br />

status.<br />

Asylum <strong>seekers</strong> must come to the CGE <strong>in</strong> person each month to receive the basic allowance.<br />

The rates vary accord<strong>in</strong>g to the type of board <strong>and</strong> lodg<strong>in</strong>g provided as shown below:<br />

On a case by case basis, <strong>and</strong> under certa<strong>in</strong> circumstances, the Social Department of the CGE is<br />

allowed to reduce the amount of the <strong>social</strong> benefits.<br />

An annual cloth<strong>in</strong>g allowance is paid to families liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> centres as follows:<br />

* these amounts are paid to applicants stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> centres where all meals are provided. If meals<br />

are not all provided, the amounts are paid at a rate reduced by 40%<br />

Cloth<strong>in</strong>g is free <strong>for</strong> <strong>asylum</strong> <strong>seekers</strong> lack<strong>in</strong>g means. Clothes can be either given directly by the<br />

Red Cross or Caritas, or provided by means of purchase coupons.<br />

After three months, <strong>asylum</strong> <strong>seekers</strong> are entitled to further assistance, such as free language<br />

tuition <strong>and</strong> free public transport.<br />

They may also apply <strong>for</strong> extra f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the school year or when a<br />

child is born.<br />

Asylum <strong>seekers</strong> with their own resources are not entitled to free accommodation or free cloth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>social</strong> benefits are granted accord<strong>in</strong>g to their needs <strong>and</strong> resources.<br />
