SOCIAL CONDITIONS FOR PERSONS UNDER TEMPORARY PROTECTION<br />

Introduction/<strong>legal</strong> basis<br />

Hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This group consists of Kosovo Albanians who came to the UK under the UNHCR Humanitarian<br />

Evacuation Programme of Spr<strong>in</strong>g/Summer 1999. They were given one year’s exceptional leave to<br />

enter the UK (temporary protection).<br />

Kosovo Albanians under temporary protection were <strong>in</strong>itially housed <strong>in</strong> reception centres, but<br />

many have now moved out <strong>in</strong>to private accommodation. Their rights to hous<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> related<br />

benefits are the same as <strong>for</strong> people with ELR (see previous section).<br />

As <strong>for</strong> people with ELR.<br />

As <strong>for</strong> those granted Convention status or ELR.<br />

Repatriation<br />

Kosovo Albanians who are under temporary protection can apply to visit Kosovo <strong>and</strong> then return<br />

to the UK under the “Explore <strong>and</strong> Prepare” scheme. This is organised by a group called ODA,<br />

f<strong>in</strong>anced by the government.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial support is available to those Kosovo Albanians who register <strong>for</strong> voluntary return be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

25 June 2000 (even if the actual departure takes place at a later date).<br />
