Antibiotic-sensitive bacteria that are gradually exposed to increasing concentrations of a given antibiotic develop increasing resistance to that antibiotic and that induces the resistance increase to other unrelated antibiotics. The development of a MDR phenotype suggests that the development of multidrug resistance in Gram-negative bacteria in patients treated with subinhibitory doses of the antibiotic occurs via the same mechanism (30).
