DARAJA Mbili WARD INTERVENTION
A Study <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Impact</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> on Poor Urban Livelihoods in Arusha, Tanzania
1. Community <strong>Energy</strong> Focal Point and Ward Committees
<strong>The</strong> participants realized that there is a need to establish a community <strong>Energy</strong> Focal point in Daraja
Mbili. This is a community based centre that will address the problems <strong>of</strong> energy use and suggest
the possible solutions.
Responsiblity/Roles <strong>of</strong> the Focal Point
• Provide education on the use <strong>of</strong> alternative energy.
• Promote alternative energy
• Repair (minor repair) <strong>of</strong> stoves. i.e energy saving stoves.
• Sales <strong>of</strong> energy saving stoves.
• Search other places where they can get alternative energy
• Keep records <strong>of</strong> sales <strong>of</strong> stoves and any other transactions.
Structure <strong>of</strong> the Group/Committee
• Chairperson
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Two experts (for manufacture/repair)
• Six members one from each street.
<strong>The</strong> committee comprise the following people:-

<strong>The</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> the committee for Daraja Mbili consisted mostly <strong>of</strong> the current Ward Officials and
street leader as proposed by the participants hence the gender imbalance in the composition.
In Daraja Mbili, the committee has an opportunity to use the expertise <strong>of</strong> Mr Tungaraza who deals
with the promotion <strong>of</strong> metal works products. He is the key person <strong>of</strong> VIMEGRO(Vijana Metal
Group) and he has a great exposure through participating in various exhibitions organized by SIDO
– Arusha. Thus, it is expected that Mr Tungaraza’s VIMEGRO initiatives will be utilized fully by
making stoves and sell at an affordable price. On the other hand these initiatives will boost an
employment to most <strong>of</strong> the youth, hence improve their livelihood.
<strong>The</strong> Committee members are very conscious to establish a Community <strong>Energy</strong> Focal Point. Due to
its nature <strong>of</strong> composition, they are starting with conducting meetings within their streets to create
awareness to community members on energy issues. <strong>The</strong>y expect to rent a room for the <strong>of</strong>fice
once the starting capital is acquired through various community initiatives and selling briquettes
from WODSTA and stoves from VIMEGRO metal work.
<strong>The</strong> participants proposed the following action Plans for Community <strong>Energy</strong> Initiative and Focal
Point respectively as follows.
