1.2 Structure of the Workshop The opening of workshop will be followed by two days of a conference-style dialogue in which relevant themes <strong>and</strong> concepts will be introduced in the format of keynote papers <strong>and</strong> case studies. We will share experiences <strong>and</strong> set the stage for an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> analysis of pastoral systems <strong>and</strong> rangel<strong>and</strong> management in different settings. This will lead us to a dialogue on the linkages with other economic activities <strong>and</strong> to a comparative perspetive derived from neighbouring regions within the PR of China such as Xinjiang <strong>and</strong> with neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Pakistan <strong>and</strong> Tajikistan. The broadening of income sources is not restricted to tourism practices alone. Consequently, we shall be investigating other sources for niche production that are used by pastoralists for generating additional income. The link between pastoral production <strong>and</strong> markets could pose another bottle-neck. Therefore we shall pay attention to market relations from the perspective of animal husb<strong>and</strong>ry <strong>and</strong> its products as ell as from ad- 25 > > > 1. ditional resources that play a growing role for pastolists. The experiences on the Tibetan Plateau (Photo 1) will be highlighted during our field trip to Nam Tso Region. Along the route we shall vit pastoral households <strong>and</strong> a research station focusing on yak-breeding. Following the fieldtrip will be a full day of working groups in which the input from the presentations will form the basis for mutual discussions on various aspects in the pastoral sector. The final day will be devoted to formulating recommendations tha are the expression of mutual discussion, prioritising pressing issues <strong>and</strong> identifying field for future action. The recommendations will be presented in a format that will be shared with relevant institutions within TAR. 26
